As we enter March, the days are gradually becoming warmer. March and April are seasons of endings and new beginnings. Students move on to the next grade or a new environment, and even adults may experience changes in their workplace. As for something that has recently changed for me, I replaced the speakers around my desk at home. I wanted to improve the low-frequency performance, so I went for larger ones, but it feels like the sound resolution has increased so much that I’m hearing details I never noticed before, making my hobby of watching movies even more enjoyable these days. However, hay fever is the one thing I absolutely cannot forgive. Seriously, I won’t forgive you.
Now then, for those of you who want to start something new, I’d like to introduce this article, “How to Start Street Performing.”
Alright, let’s get started!
What is street performing in the first place?
Street performing (street live) refers to performing music or other acts in public spaces such as sidewalks and parks. While it allows you to share your music with an unspecified number of passersby, using public spaces means that maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and adhering to public rules is extremely important.
Where can you do street performing?
In fact, there are very few places where you can freely perform anywhere without restrictions in Japan. It generally falls into the following three categories:
Authorized live spots
These are locations approved by local governments or shopping districts.
Examples: KOBE Machinaka Performance (Kobe City), Machikado Music Stage (Funabashi City)
Advantages: Although prior registration may be required, you don’t have to worry about being stopped by the police, allowing you to focus on your performance with peace of mind.

Roads and station plazas (permission required)
In principle, you need to obtain a “road usage permit” from the local police station. This is based on the Road Traffic Act, and if your street performance involves using part of a road, applying through the police station is the standard procedure.

Private property (such as commercial facility premises)
You can perform if you have permission from the property manager.
How do you get started?
STEP 1: Walk around and choose a location
First, walk around and find a place where you could see your music fitting in with the surrounding area. It’s important to consider not only the amount of foot traffic, but also how the sound carries and whether there is space that won’t obstruct passersby.
Of course, make sure to look within areas where you have proper permission!
STEP 2: Prepare your equipment
For example, if you’re doing guitar and vocals:
Must-have items!
- Guitar
- Guitar amplifier
- Microphone
- Cables between equipment
- Power source for equipment (nearby outlets or portable generators, etc.)
Nice to have
- Microphone stand
- Signboard / social media info
- Tip box
That’s about it. If you use battery-powered speakers, you may not need an external power source.
STEP 3: Try it while checking volume levels
It’s surprising that you can get started in just three steps. As long as you have the motivation, the barrier to start isn’t as high as you might think.
Here are some speakers suitable for street performances that are available at Sound House:
For band-style performances:
JBL / EON208P Portable PA System
BEHRINGER / PPA500BT EUROPORT Compact PA Set
For 1–2 performers:
CLASSIC PRO / PA-BOX Event Mini Live Street Speaker
JBL / EON ONE Compact All-in-One Battery-Powered PA System
SAMSON / Expedition Explor Battery-Powered Portable PA Speaker
For those who want maximum portability:
CLASSIC PRO / MoniOne PA Speaker
Important rules and etiquette you must follow
To continue street performing over the long term, consideration for others is essential.
Control your volume
If your music is perceived as noise, your performance will be shut down immediately. Keep amplifier volume moderate and avoid interfering with nearby businesses.
Do not block passageways
Audiences may stop and block the path. It’s also the performer’s responsibility to politely ask them to move, such as saying, “Please step a little further inside.”
How to respond to police officers
If a complaint leads to police intervention, do not argue and promptly pack up your equipment. Responding politely helps preserve the local music culture.
That’s a basic introduction to how to start street performing.
The process is similar for other performances like street acts as well.
Many now-famous artists such as Yuzu, Kobukuro, Aimyon, and Ikimonogakari got their start street performing. If you want to start music but don’t know how, or if you want to become like someone you admire, any reason is a good one. Why not muster up the courage to start?
That’s all for now.
See you next time!
