This is the fourth time I have introduced a special effector, and the requests that have been accumulated are nearing the end.
This time, we will talk about a kind of synthesizer for guitar and bass, an organ machine and a keyboard machine.
This "turning the sound of the guitar into the sound of other musical instruments" effector, commonly known as the "9" series, mainly produced by Electro-Harmonix, is a fairly interesting effector like the company that has made many color effectors.
I will. These are all digital effectors, and the principle is to detect the input pitch like the pitch shifter → add the sound of the effector, and since it is not easy to explain, there is no principle edition this time.
Those who are interested should check with "MPM algorithm", "Pitch detection principle", and "Pitch detection algorithm".
Now, let's talk about the main subject, the stomp box.
There are 6 9 series, and they are mainly classified into octaver, 5 of "B9 Organ Machine", "C9 Organ Machine", "KEY9 Electric Piano Machine", "SYNTH9 Synthesizer Machine" and "MEL9 Tape Replay Machine" which are treated as synthesizers. There is often a "BASS 9 Bass Machine".
As a specification common to all, it has 4 knobs and 1 rotor switch, and it is possible to use 9 types of presets.
The breakdown of the knobs is that two are the volume of the dry sound and the effect sound, and the other two are the operation systems peculiar to the stomp box.
In addition, it is common to all machines that both effect sound and dry sound can be output with two outputs, making it possible to create fairly detailed sounds.
Let's introduce it.
ELECTRO-HARMONIX / B9 Organ Machine
preset:
- FAT & FULL (1:18~)
- JAZZ (1:49~)
- GOSPEL (3:08~)
- CLASSIC ROCK (3:48~)
- BOTTOM END (4:23~)
- OCTAVES (7:36~)
- CATHEDRAL (4:54~)
- CONTINENTAL (5:44~)
- BELL ORGAN (6:53~)
In the video you watch, there are various adjustment examples such as adding reverb on the amplifier side and distorting it as well as B9 alone.
Basically, the MOD knob is the modulation and the CLICK knob is the volume of the organ key noise.
You can add chorus with the MOD knobs in presets 1 to 6, tremolo in 7 and 9, and vibrato in both MOD and CLICK in 8.
The CLICK knob has a tremolo depth of 7 and a knob for adding the chime sound of an electronic piano.
ELECTRO-HARMONIX / C9 Organ Machine
preset:
- TONE WHEEL (1:02~)
- PROG (1:55~)
- COMPACT (2:38~)
- SHIMMER (3:46~)
- LORD PURPLE (4:54~)
- MELLO FLUTES (6:08~)
- BLIMP (6:49~)
- PRESS TONE (7:52~)
- TELSTAR (10:22~)
It is a viewing video that is more audible than B9, such as playing while switching between B9 and C9 using a switcher, and adding a delay.
The control is more complicated than B9, and it is as follows in the order of MOD and CLICK.
* Special operations are in bold.
- Chorus, key noise volume
- Chorus, volume 5 degrees up and 1 octave down
- Vibrato speed, harmonics volume
- Attack time, sustain
- ORGAN VOL has 3 drawbar operations, MOD has chorus, and CLICK has 3 other drawbar operations.
- Vibrato speed, vibrato depth
- Amount of chorus and harmonics
- Chorus, key noise volume
- Vibrato, harmonics amount
ELECTRO-HARMONIX / KEY9 Electric Piano Machine Effect keyboard for guitar
preset:
- DYNAMO (0:51~)
- WURLI (1:32~)
- SUITCASE (2:19~)
- MALLETS (3:18~)
- EIGHTY EIGHT (3:52~)
- TRI-GLORIOUS (4:39~)
- VIBES (6:25~)
- ORGAN (6:58~)
- STEEL DRUMS (7:47~)
KEY9 outputs the sound of keyboards and other scale instruments.
With four Fender Rhodes sounds, Woolitzer piano, organ, marimba, vibraphone, and steelpan presets, it has a more complex controls than the C9.
CTRL1 and CTRL2 are as follows.
- Low frequency volume, brightness
- Tremolo depth, speed
- Bass overtones and brightness, phaser speed
- Chorus depth, speed
- Tremolo depth, speed
- Chorus depth, speed
- High-frequency attack volume, tremolo speed
- High frequency volume, rotary speed
- Chorus depth, speed
ELECTRO-HARMONIX (Electro Harmonix) / MEL9 Tape Replay Machine
preset:
- OBX (1:08~)
- PROFIT V (1:57~)
- VIVE SYNTH (7:35~)
- MINI MOOD (9:24~)
- EHX MINI (8:20~)
- SOLO SYNTH (5:36~)
- MOOD BASS (3:20~)
- STRING SYNTH (4:35~)
- POLY VI (6:49~)
It is a synthesizer with a sound that is not close to other instruments, which is suitable for being called a "synthesizer" in the 9 series.
Although there are 0 reviews, there are 3 introductory blogs (4 in this article at the time of writing), which is an effector with many mysterious points, but it can also be used for electric acoustic guitars, and it is a high-performance synthesizer with a built-in compressor / limiter. is.
The functions of CTRL1 and CTRL2 are as follows, and controls that are close to the synthesizer operation itself are installed.
- Tone operation, pitch operation
- Auto-wah sweep time, pitch operation
- Harmonics amount & sweep time, vibrato speed & depth
- Portamento volume, portamento time
- Auto wah operation, pitch operation
- Tone operation, pitch operation
- Auto-wah sweep time, octaver
- Tone operation, auto wah attack time
- Tone manipulation, modulation depth
ELECTRO-HARMONIX (Electro Harmonix) / MEL9 Tape Replay Machine
preset:
- ORCHESTRA (1:43~)
- CELLO (2:48~)
- STRINGS (3:22~)
- FLUTES (4:10~)
- CLARINET (4:54~)
- SAXOPHONE (5:35~)
- BRASS (6:22~)
- LOW CHOIR (7:01~)
- HIGH CHOIR (7:15~)
As the name suggests, it is a stomp box that reproduces the sound of a Mellotron keyboard.
The control system is ATTACK and SUSTAIN, and the operation that allows you to adjust the rise and finish of the sound does not change with any preset.
For Brass only, ATTACK controls the brightness of the sound, and SUSTAIN fine-tunes the buzz of brass instruments expressed as "Lip Buzz".
ELECTRO-HARMONIX (Electro Harmonix) / BASS9 Bass Machine
preset:
- PRECISION (1:00~)
- LONGHORN (3:29~)
- FRETLESS (6:33~)
- SYNTH (5:08~)
- VIRTUAL (8:24~)
- BOWED (9:18~)
- SPLIT BASS (10:15~)
- 3:03 (11:50~)
- FLIP-FLOP (12:41~)
The BASS 9 Bass Machine is often treated as an octaver, but it is a stomp box that changes the sound of the guitar to something completely different like the 9 series.
Where PRECISION has an octaver in the image of a Fender Precision bass, LONGHORN can homage Danelectro's baritone guitar and use a pitch shifter.
In addition, the VIRTUAL set simulates the density (weight) of the body and the length of the scale to output "from a bright solid body to a sound like a Hoffner bass", and in SPLIT BASS, only the lower 3 strings of the guitar are octad. It is an ultra-high-performance synthesizer that goes beyond just an octaver, such as being able to output the sound with a bar effect.
The controls are CTRL1 and CTRL2, but each preset has a completely different function, making it possible to create more complex sounds than SYNTH9.
The operation is as follows.
- 1-2 octaver volume, tone
- Pitch shifter, tremolo
- Fretless buzz volume, chorus
- Synth range, auto wah
- Body density, scale length
- 1-2 octaver volume, attack speed
- Tone & Brightness, Auto Wah
- Auto wah depth & range, auto wah speed
- 1-2 octaver volume, low pass
This time, we introduced all types of Electro-Harmonix 9 series. All of them can be obtained at Soundhouse for up to 25,000 yen.
Next time is the "Too Elaborate Effector" edition.
