Hasn’t it suddenly gotten incredibly hot now that July is here? The Earth really turned up the heat.
Sorry for the abrupt opening! Just a few weeks ago, I was thinking, “This summer might actually be cooler than usual,” and then the heat arrived all at once.
Please take care of yourselves during these hot summer days.
Summer is the season when neighborhoods come alive with festivals, Bon Odori dances, local fairs, and community events.
But around this time of year, we often hear questions from neighborhood association organizers and PTA volunteers such as: “I’ve suddenly been put in charge of the sound system. What should I buy?” and “How large do the speakers need to be for an outdoor plaza?”
PA equipment can seem intimidating because of all the technical terminology, but once you understand a few key points, even a complete beginner can choose the right system with confidence! In this article, I’m going to introduce the three golden rules for choosing a simple PA system for summer community events, along with several recommended models that can help make your festival or Bon Odori event a success.
The 3 Golden Rules for Choosing a Simple PA System
Outdoor events sound completely different from indoor events, so before choosing any equipment, keep these three essential points in mind!
① Choose the Right Power Output (Watts) Based on Venue Size and Audience
One of the most important speaker specifications is power output, measured in watts (W). Outdoors, sound spreads in every direction, so you’ll generally need more power than you would indoors. A useful rule of thumb for indoor events is 1-2 watts per person. For example, if you’re planning an event for 100 to 150 people, a system with around 150-300 watts of output is usually a safe starting point. This helps prevent common problems such as distortion, weak volume, or sound that doesn’t reach the audience clearly. For outdoor events, many sound engineers use a guideline of roughly three times the power required for an indoor event. Because there are fewer reflective surfaces outdoors, sound disperses much more easily, so it’s generally better to choose a system with extra headroom and higher sound pressure capability. That said, these numbers are only rough guidelines, not strict rules. The ideal system will always depend on the actual venue, background noise, speaker placement, and the type of event you’re running.

② Check Portability and Power Availability
Many summer events take place in locations such as school grounds, parks, shrine precincts, or other outdoor venues where power outlets may not be available. In those situations, a battery-powered PA system is the easiest and most reliable solution. If setup and teardown will be handled by one person or a small team, an all-in-one portable PA system with built-in wheels or a lightweight design that can be carried with one hand is incredibly convenient.
Here are a few battery-powered models we highly recommend:
JBL / EON ONE Compact - All-in-One Battery-Powered Portable PA System
JBL / EON ONE MK2 - Battery-Powered All-in-One Column PA System
QSC / CB10 - Battery-Powered Powered Speaker
③ Think About the Number of Microphones You Need and Whether They Should Be Wireless
Before choosing a PA system, count how many microphones you will need at the same time—for example, one for the MC, one for guest speakers, and a spare microphone. If your event includes a Bon Odori caller or the MC who moves around frequently, we strongly recommend choosing a system that supports wireless microphones. Wireless microphones eliminate the risk of tripping over cables and make outdoor events much easier to manage. Below are several portable PA systems along with wireless microphones that pair well with each one:
Samson / Expedition Explorer - Battery-Powered Portable PA Speaker
Samson / XPD2 Handheld - Wireless USB Microphone
Behringer / PPA2000BT Europort - Portable PA System
JBL / EON208P - Portable PA system
AKG / WMS40 Pro Mini2 Vocal Set Dual

Sound Tips for Festival Day: Get the Most Out of Your PA System
Finally, here are a few practical tips to help you get the best performance from your PA system and avoid common problems on the day of the event!
Raise Your Speakers to Ear Level Using Speaker Stands!
If speakers are placed directly on the ground, the people standing in the front rows will block the sound, making it difficult for those farther away to hear clearly. Positioning the speakers at approximately ear height allows the sound to travel farther and remain much clearer throughout the venue.
Prevent Feedback by Paying Attention to Mic Position
If someone holding a microphone stands directly in front of a speaker, you may hear the familiar high-pitched feedback squeal. To avoid this, make sure anyone using a microphone stands behind or to the side of the speakers, and plan the stage or event layout accordingly.

一PA equipment may seem complicated at first, but if you focus on choosing the right power for your audience size, ensuring a reliable power source, and positioning your speakers correctly, you’re already well on your way to a successful event!
Summer festivals and Bon Odori celebrations are special occasions that bring the whole community together. With the right sound setup, you can help create an unforgettable day for everyone involved.
See you next time!
