This might be the Best Solution for A Streaming Case: A Thorough Review of the SKB 1SKB-ISF4U

Among the many cases available at Sound House, there is one that I, as a case specialist, have recently been interested in.
That is the SKB "1SKB-ISF4U."

What piqued my interest in this case is that it has a dedicated space to place a laptop above the rack-mount space. Although it looks simple, as far as I know, I haven't seen any cases from other manufacturers with a similar shape. So, I would like to get my hands on it immediately and give you my thoughts on it.

First, let's look at the exterior. I have seen many SKB products so far, and the biggest feature of SKB products is that at first glance it looks really sturdy. It gives a great sense of security.

Now, I first unlatched the catch locks on the side of the top lid and lifted it up. The laptop installation space I was curious about appeared inside.

Looking even closer, there are three holes in the top lid, including the sides and the bottom part. These holes provide access to the inside of the case, and there is a thoughtful design that allows you to connect cables to the installed laptop from here. It's convenient. Incidentally, each corner is attached with Velcro, which you can remove by hand so you can adjust it to the size of your laptop. I think it’s easier to operate when removed while actually working, but for transport, by fitting it perfectly to the size, the laptop is fixed in place and stable even when the lid is closed and moved.

The actual setup looks like this. Since urethane foam is also included on the lid, it properly protects the laptop when the lid is closed.

Now, let's take a look at the 4U rack-mount space. The screws are properly installed in the rails with nuts for the full number of units. Therefore, there is no need to separately purchase rack screws to rack-mount your equipment. Everything is sturdily built, which is reassuring. By the way, when you remove the screws...

the screws also come with washers. There is no need to worry about damaging your equipment when rack-mounting.

Some of you might have noticed when looking at the rack-mount space that there is a key inside. This is the key for locking the catch locks on the top lid and are TSA-compliant. It’s reassuring to have that extra level of security. By the way, the front and rear lids for the rack-mount space are…

It's a bit hard to see, but you open and close them by hooking the bottom part into the grooves inside the case like this. However, because these front and rear lids are designed to be covered and secured by the top lid, you need to open and close them in a specific order:

• Opening: Top lid → Front/rear lids
• Closing: Front/rear lids → Top lid

You’ll understand this immediately once you actually touch it. It’s a much simpler and more intuitive structure than it is to describe in words.

Now, let's look at the handle part on the back. When you press the red button and pull it upward, the handle slides out smoothly. Of course, there are casters on the bottom, so you can tilt it and it rolls just like a carry-on suitcase. The movement is smooth and good.

By the way, when the handle is extended, the height from the bottom to the top of the handle is roughly 96 cm. This may depend on your height, but I think it’s just about right—neither too high nor too low.

Finally, let’s take a look at a few of the case's parts. There are two casters on one side. When rolling it using the pull-out handle, tilt it toward the caster side to roll. On the side opposite the catch locks for the top lid, there are hinge fittings. Of course, this section can be detached, making the top lid removable.

Looking at every corner of the case, I felt even more of its potential as a case for streaming. The most distinctive points are definitely:

• You can store your laptop when transporting.
• When in use, just open the lid to immediately connect and operate.

This kind of setup is also possible. Of course, you could load a rack-mount size audio interface or processor to build a DTM environment, not just for streaming equipment. Or you could place a small mixer instead of a PC on top to operate it at a PA site. There are various ways to use it, and it is undoubtedly a case that can be useful in any situation.
