EL Wire Tube has the flexibility to be bent however which way and emits a soft light. In this blog, I will try to make a neon flamingo using EL Wire Tube. Now, let's get started!
■ What to prepare
- EL wire
STAGE EVOLUTION / SFL2 Purple
- Acrylic board
- Black vinyl tape
- Scissors
- Drill
- Magic pen
- Cardboard/paper
Now, let's get to it!
1. Decide on a Design and Make a Temporary Stencil using Cardboard.
The design is based on an actual neon sign. This time, I’m making a flamingo for this project!
Once the design is decided, I’m going to mark the position of the hole for the EL wire tube, the line you want to show and the line you want to hide. Like this ↓.

The actual EL wire tube is threaded through the hole.

Next, check the detailed placement and the required length of the tube.
2. Drill Holes in the Acrylic Sheet
Once the design and drilling position are finished in step 1, the rest is easy. Drill holes in the acrylic sheet that will actually be used. Here is the acrylic sheet with the holes already drilled.

By the way, it is really difficult to drill holes in an acrylic sheet like this without a drill. I have never used a drill before, so I asked my boss to do it for me. Thank you m(__)m
3. Threading the EL Wire Tubing
I would like to do a quick job here, but it turned out that I was missing a…hole.
Oh dear ↓.

I went to my boss to ask him to drill the holes again. I’m sorry! <(_ _ _)> Take care everyone.
Yes, I did it! Here is the EL Tube after the hole was successfully drilled.

It looks pretty good!
4. Hold down the back side with black vinyl tape.
This is a simple task, but it is important for the appearance. The tape is wrapped around the length of the part that is going to be hidden.

5. Neon Sign Complete('▽') Make It Glow!

This is what it looks like when it’s pitch black* The color of the EL Wire Tube is changed to red. ↓↓

How was it? I think the work itself is easy if you don't make a design that is too elaborate. By the way, I made another design.

I hope you might give this project a try, too!
