What is Chiikawa?

Chiikawa Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu (Something Small and Cute) is a manga work by Nagano and was initially serialised on Twitter since 2020 and was published into book form in 2021.As of October 2022, has sold more than one million copies including digital editions.

The three main characters are Chiikawa (the main character) and her friendsHachiware and Usagi.

●Chiikawa

Chiikawa is the main character in the story. Chiikawa speaks mainly simple words such as "waa", "aa", "un" and " yaa", and does not speak in the language of the human world. Her personality is timid, she cries easily, and when she’s feeling happy, she says 'wah-yi' to express happiness, making Chiikawa a very cute and emotionally rich character. (By the way, my favourite character is Chiikawa. Waa...///)

●Hachiware

Chiikawa's friend and a good companion. Hachiware is the only one of the three main characters who can speak the language of the human world. She has a very positive personality, and gives the impression of getting to the point and is caring, saying phrases like, "Make it work!" in order to break out of a crisis, helping Chiikawa when Chiikawa is in trouble. Hachiware also serves homemade food and passes the 5th level of the "Weeding Test".
(Also, speaking metaphorically, the appearance of Hachiware has broadened the scope of the story, or something to that extent... Kurimanju-senpai, who has been around since rather early on, doesn't actually talk either...)

●Usagi

Often shouts 'ulala la la la la la la', 'pullulul', 'yiiiiiiaaaa' and sometimes 'hah?' and other harsh responses. Usagi is just a wild character. She also has a big appetite and is always eating something in the Chiikawa World. However, Usagi is actually a very dependable bunny in a pinch, with a 'weed-walking test level 3'. Usagi sometimes sees through the true nature of bad guys that appear and saves Chiikawa and her friends. Ulala la la la la!

Plot Outline

One day, Hachiware finds out that Chiikawa has been studying to pass the 5th level of the Weeding Exam, and they start studying together to pass the exam together. On the day of the exam, the two of them take the test together, but to their surprise, only Hachiware passes.

In this story, Chiikawa was studying hard and Hachiware was studying optimistically.After the exam, Chiikawa was extremely depressed and Hachiware didn't know what to do. Hachiware's line "When we don't feel the same way... what should I do..." left a strong impression as Hachiware was troubled by the thought of her friend. The story then ends with Chiikawa and Hachiware coming closer to each other and being united by a stronger friendship.
This kind of worry about invisible things overlaps in everyday life, doesn't it? I think one of the appeals of Chiikawa is that it depicts emotions that cannot be depicted by text alone.

Chiikawa is an ongoing serialisation on X (formerly Twitter), depicting Chiikawa and her friends living in a warm and friendly atmosphere. (I understand that feeling of wanting to live as such a small and cute fluffy animal. I understand...)
