For all the beginner bassists who feel that "I can now play the song I've always wanted to play, but something sounds like it’s missing compared to the original song." Well, there may be a solution to your problem by playing through effects pedals!
In this blog, we will focus on compressors and preamps that are great for beginners and I will introduce popular bass pedals used by professionals as well.
01 Compressor
The role of a compressor is to balance the grain of the sound. Just as it is difficult to drive on a road with rocks of various sizes, it is difficult to listen to how the output varies depending on the picking or position. This may be the reason why you feel that the fingers turn but the sound is somehow not balanced ........ It is not something that will significantly change the sound quality, but as a first step to achieve a stable bass sound, you may want to consider it.
EBS / MultiComp BlueLabel Effects Pedals for Bass
If you ask a bassist, "Which is the best compressor?" This model is probably the one that comes out on top. Despite its seemingly simple design, the compressor has a mode switch that allows the user to select from three different compressor types. The Multiband mode, which separately compresses the high and low range, is especially recommended for those who like to play slap. This model delivers a natural attack and long sustain, and is easy to handle with low noise.
BOSS / BC-1X Bass Comp Effects Pedals for Bass
This model uses BOSS's own advanced MDP technology to provide natural compression that does not affect the character of the original sound. The gain reduction indicator allows you to visually recognize the amount of compression applied. The knobs work very well, and you will surely be able to find your favorite setting.
The power supply is 9V, but is internally boosted to 18V for complete professional use. It has enough input headroom to accept any bass input signal, including active basses without clipping. This is the best compressor that you can just plug in and play.
Despite originally being used as an effects pedal for guitar, the Dynacomp has won the hearts of bassists as well. Its unique sweet percussive tone is so attractive that it is loved and called "the sound of a DAIKON”. The controls are very simple with just twooutput and sensitivity making it easy to set up. Try this model and once you get into it, you won't be able to get out of it.
Empress Effects / Bass Compressor Blue
This model is highly recommended for those who do not want to compromise on the compression function while maintaining the original sound. There are many compressor models that can be used for both guitar and bass, but this one is an all-analog signal path model designed specifically for bass.
The controls include independent Attack/Release and three selectable ratios. A mix function is also included to adjust the balance with the original sound, so you can pursue the sound you like best. A mini-switch is also included to add mild overtone textures and enhance the rich character of the sound. I hope the text alone conveys the multifunctional nature of this product.
02 Preamp
An outboard preamp is a pedal that allows you to "adjust the sound quality and volume" before connecting it to a bass amp. You can use the EQ to adjust the output for each specific frequency, or the volume knob to adjust the overall output, and many models are also equipped with distortion effects and D.I. functions. You also have preamp pedals that can reproduce the traditional sound from the classic amp brands that everyone knows. So you can carry your favorite sounds with you any time.
TECH21 / Sansamp Sansamp / Bass Driver DI V2 Standard Preamp
It's no exaggeration to say that most bass players have used this preamp at least once. It looks great whether you play fingerstyle, pick, or slap. The V2 model has a frequency switch to cover 5 and 6 strings, so if you are considering purchasing a multi-string bass in the future, this is highly recommended. Also, if you like the V-shaped sound, this model is for you!
BOSS / BB-1X Bass Driver Preamp for Bass
The BB-1X Bass Driver is a preamp that produces a well-balanced sound from bass to treble with good clarity. It has a wider sound range and clearer sound quality than other preamps. The controls are simple and intuitive, and the sturdy construction and cost-effective price are outstanding. Using original MDS technology, it firmly expresses natural sound without blurring fingerpicked notes..
This is not a pedal that asserts more individuality than necessary, which would define the character of the sound, but rather based on an unprecedented concept that accurately captures the nuances of your playing and amplifies the best parts of it to the fullest, without compromising the character of the bass itself or the amp. This pedal is truly one that creates the modern bass sound while maintaining the core of the sound with a wide variety of tones.
MXR / M80 Bass D.I. + Standard Bass Preamp
Along with the aforementioned Sansamp, this preamp has long been a favorite of many bassists. It has a separate distortion channel and a COLOR switch that allows you to instantly switch to a V-shape sound, making it useful on a wide variety of stages. The Blend knob can be utilized to adjust the balance between the original sound and distortion to achieve a deep bass sound even when loudly distorting. Noise that may be bothersome when distorting can be reduced by turning the Gate switch (noise gate) ON. This is an excellent model packed with features that modern bassists demand!
Darkglass Electronics / Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 With Aux IN Bass Preamp
Darkglass Electronics / Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 With Aux IN Bass Preamp The Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 is equipped with a 4-band EQ with High/Low Mid and an Attack Switch/Grunt Switch for fine-tuning the high/low frequency range, allowing you to express your ideal sound. Needless to say, it’s useful for live performances, but what's more, this is also suitable for home recording using DAW software! The IR (impulse response) is also included, so you can connect it to your PC/Mac via the Micro-USB B port, load a virtual cabinet, and take your favorite sound with you wherever you go. It also has a headphone out, a balanced XLR OUT, and an AUX IN. This is a very practical model that will help you progress in your musical activities only with this
The Ashdown Pro-DI may look like it has a lot of knobs, but it is a multifunctional preamp, and once you get used to it, you will definitely love it for a long time.
Equipped with a 5-band EQ that can be finely adjusted from bass to treble, the Shape switch allows you to create a V-shape sound in one shot. There is also a PAD switch with -3dB cutoff for use with either active or passive basses at the appropriate signal level. The drive controls can be adjusted for volume and amount of distortion separately, and can be used as a clean boost or as an overdrive. There is also a mute function (SHOWTIME switch), which is useful for tuner output. There is also a Line in that allows you to adjust the mix level, so you can practice while listening with headphones. The VU meter, which shows the input level, is the most attractive feature, and the DI output provides professional-grade sound performance in any environment, from practicing at home to recording at a live show or studio.
03 Extra Edition Pedal-Type Tuners
As an extra edition, here are some pedal-type tuners that beginners should get. Even if you normally use a clip tuner, it may be annoying to have to put it on, start tuning, and then take it off during a live performance. It also doesn’t really look cool. If you have a pedal-type tuner at your feet, you can mute it and quickly fix it during the MC!
Clip tuners detect vibrations, but pedal-type tuners, like effects pedals, detect electrical signals, so they can tune accurately without picking up surrounding sounds.
And, since many recent models use a high-performance buffer circuit, it is a good idea to choose a pedal-type tuner with this feature in mind.
Some models of pedal-type tuners do not support batteries. In that case, it is recommended to connect to a power supply and use it in conjunction with other pedals (sometimes it also works as a mute switch/kill switch)!
The newly developed ULTRA BUFFER buffer circuit maintains sound quality even when long cables are used or when many effects pedals are connected to a board. In addition, the bright mode can be set in two levels to achieve high visibility even on outdoor stages where natural light is reflected. Four different meter display modes allow users to choose their preferred tuning display, and Pitchblack X is available in several different sizes, so you can find the model that best fits your board!
TC ELECTRONIC / Polytune 3 Polyphonic Tuner
This is the pedal-type tuner that everyone knows by now. You can choose from three different modes to suit your preference and setting. In addition to the standard chromatic mode, the strobe mode offers a very high tuning accuracy of +/-0.02 cents.Polyphonic Mode allows tuning of multiple strings at once, saving you a considerable amount of time! Bassists may not be familiar with this mode, but guitarists will find it convenient because they can tune all the strings in one stroke.
This also has a high-performance buffer to reduce sound quality degradation/slimming caused by long cables and complex pedal designs.
04Conclusion
I hope you could understand the lineup of standard bass pedals, even if it's only a little bit understandable. They are not cheap if you try to have one for each application, but when you get closer to the sound of the artist you admire, practice will become more enjoyable, your performance will improve, and you will love live performances even more. You can find videos on each product page, so go take a look!
