Do you know what makes each mouthpiece unique? Today, I’ll introduce you to Theo Wanne!
Who is Theo Wanne?
Theo Wanne is a world-renowned designer who specializes in the design and production of saxophone and clarinet mouthpieces.

He became an expert in mouthpiece refacing after apprenticing with Bob Carpenter to become a vintage saxophone and mouthpiece repair technician.
In 2007, Theo began manufacturing saxophones and mouthpieces, spending years designing for famous players. Some examples include:
Joshua Redman
Chris Potter
Eric Alexander
Jan Garbarek
Nelson Rangell
Tim Price
All of his mouthpieces are created with precision engineering, ensuring maximum consistent quality, unlike many handmade mouthpieces.
Theo has visited Japan several times, where he refaced Japanese saxophone players’ mouthpieces, leaving them impressed with his work.
Differences in Sound
The diagram below illustrates the sound profiles of mouthpieces other than those from Theo Wanne’s current Element Series.
Moving from left to right, the sound becomes more suited to modern music.

Mouthpiece sound characteristics are primarily determined by two factors: the baffle and the chamber.
1. Baffle
The baffle refers to the area about 2 cm from the tip of the mouthpiece.
Theo Wanne mainly uses three types: Flat, Roll-Over, and Step Baffle.
■ Flat Baffle

Produces a deep, soft tone.
■ Roll-Over Baffle

Offers a deep tone with a slightly wild overtone.
■ Step Baffle

Creates a bright tone with a fast, airy sound.

2. Chamber
The chamber is essentially the diameter inside the mouthpiece. A smaller diameter results in faster airspeed.
■ Large Chamber

The larger diameter than the neck entry requires strong breath support.
■ Medium Chamber

Allows for a more direct airflow, producing a centered tone.
■ Small Chamber

Produces a powerful tone with its smaller diameter.

This concludes today’s tips on choosing a mouthpiece.
