I have been curious about Gator’s rack bag for a while. Just the other day, I finally had the chance to see one for the first time, so I had a good look at them! So, without further ado, here is my review of Gator’s rack bag. Here it is!
This time I’m reviewing these products
Gator / GR-RACKBAG-2UW 2U Rack Bag with Wheels
For this issue, I chose two of the standard Gator rack bags. First of all, what exactly is a rack bag? For those who are wondering, a rack bag is simply a bag for equipment that can be mounted on a 19-inch rack, making it easy and convenient to carry! This bag is especially recommended for those who find that hard rack cases are too heavy for them. Let’s take a look at these rack bags.

I took them out of the packaging and laid them out side by side. The left one is GR-RACKBAG-2UW and the right one is GRB-2U. Not only are the product specifications different, but the logos are different for varying tastes. Both have a good design.
Now, let’s take a look at each bag individually.
GRB-2U
Let’s start with the external design of the GRB-2U.

It comes with a solid handle and a shoulder strap. Both seem to be perfectly strong and well made. Now let’s look at the interior.

Here is the inside with the front zipper open. The inside is a solid rack. The size is 2U and the surface has a carpet material feel. The fact that there are drying packets inside from the beginning is also a nice consideration. Now, I’m interested in the rear (back) part.

The front side has a zipper from the edge of the bag along the outer frame of the case, but the rear side has the zipper slightly inside the outer frame. By the way, rear rack rails are not attached. There are four rubber feet on the rear side. They seem to be screwed firmly to the bag. This means that the bag can be placed upright with the front side up. Also, as some of you may have noticed, the rack part inside the bag is firmly fixed to the bag part with screws, so it is basically impossible to remove it from the inside of the bag.

Now let’s open the front lid and take a look inside at the GR-RACKBAG-2UW.

This is another 2U rack bag. The first difference you will notice compared to the GRB-2U introduced earlier is the rack frame. This one has an aluminum frame. This part looks similar to Sound House’s CLASSIC PRO CPA Series rack case.

Some of you may have looked this over and thought, “Huh?” Some of you might have thought that a blank panel with a logo on it was installed in the upper unit. I thought, “So, if this space is included, it must be 3U...?” However, since this rack bag has a pull-out handle for carrying and its mechanism is built inside the case, it seems that space is created on the top side so that it does not interfere with that part when the equipment is rack-mounted. Therefore, the actual rack mount size is 2U.

This is the sash section. Since it has screws from the original, these can be used as screws for equipment rack mounting. Now, let’s look at the rear side.

Looking from the front, I thought there were screw holes in the rear as well...? but since the inner screw plate is not included, it seems that the equipment can only be attached to the front of the rack. By the way, the inner rack is not removable.
Now let’s look at the outer parts.

The case has a fixed handle and pull-out handle at the top of the case. Of course, it can be carried like a suitcase because it has wheels on the underside. These will be useful when carrying slightly heavy equipment.

Finally, here are the wheels and the rubber feet on the rear side lid. The wheels ride smoothly without any problems. The rubber feet are also stable.
What do you think? My overall impression is that, as I felt when I reviewed Gator’s plastic rack cases in the past, Gator’s products are well made down to the smallest detail, which gives you a sense of security even before you start storing your equipment. In addition, I felt that the durability of the rack bag, which is often seen as a negative point due to its simplicity, was covered by solid construction on each part. If you are looking for a rack case to carry your equipment but are concerned about the weight, I highly recommend this rack bag.
