For drummers who are changing snare heads for the first time, there are so many different types of heads to choose from.
You may be at a loss as to which head to choose to achieve your ideal sound.
To help you out in this case, I will introduce some of the most popular models of snare heads sold at Sound House, following the previous article on drumsticks!
Let's start with this one!
EVANS / B14UV1
This head features Evans' proprietary UV curable coating technology and the company's LEVEL360 Technology, which makes it easier to obtain a stable pitch and even balance.
Tuning is easy to determine, and is especially recommended for those who find tuning difficult or as first-time head replacements.
The head's surface coating is resistant to peeling and chipping, making it one of the most durable drumheads available.
It features a clearer sound with a better rise than the REMO.
REMO / 114BA
This is the most standard drumhead for snare drums, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is the best standard drumhead. This model is used by default on many snare drums and is a trusted manufacturer. This head has a coarse coating on the surface film, which is called a “coated” spec.
The surface coating gives it a moderately short sustain and a warm tone with lots of overtones.
It is an all-round head that can be used for various genres of music. If you have any doubts, this model is definitely a great first choice!
There are two types of REMO heads with the same model: one with 00 printed at the bottom and the other with JP printed.
These two types are the difference between overseas specifications (00) and domestic specifications (JP), and the points of each are as follows.
■ Domestic Specifications (JP)
Base film: Smooth white (DuPont Merinex)
Tonal characteristics: Bright tone with strong attack, tight and hard sound
■ Overseas specification (00)
Base film: Clear (DuPont Hazy)
Tone characteristics: Soft tone with many overtones, taut and open sound
REMO / CS-114BA [CS-0114-10
This is a Control Sound (CS) model with a “black dot” film in the center of the film to cut excess overtones. It is characterized by a tight, sharp tone with a pronounced attack. There are two types: coated and uncoated, and the coated type tends to be more popular at Sound House.
BONNEY DRUM JAPAN / White Coated Head 14”
Drumheads produced by BONNEY DRUM, an elite drum manufacturer in Japan. Made in Japan handmade by craftsmen in Japan.
By using a different film than other companies' heads, such as REMO, the snare has a brighter sound and a more subdued sound without the distinct characteristics that could not be obtained with plastic film heads. It also has a long life that is resistant to deterioration.
The sound is good whether the tension is tight or loose. The wide tuning range and easy sound cohesion without muting make it a recommended head for drummers who want to enjoy the true sound of the shell without muting.
LUDWIG / LW3314
LUDWIG drumheads have been used by many star players and are admired by many drummers.
This 1PLY head is made from a single sheet of film. The thicker head is a little more prone to wear and tear than other brands, but the bright, open sound that is typical of LUDWIG outweighs this disadvantage.
Many drummers have become addicted to these heads.
This time I introduced a popular snare head. Snare drums can be tuned up to various tones depending on the head to which it is attached.
I think it is one of the joys of trying out different drum heads and finding your own favorite tone.
Please try to find a snare head that suits you best.
