When storing instruments in a case, a cleaning cloth is convenient for removing rosin dust and skin oil stains. You might think there’s no difference between just any cloth, but in reality, it can vary quite a bit depending on the manufacturer. In this article, we will focus on cleaning cloths specifically made for string instruments!
Points to consider when choosing a cloth for string instruments
When selecting a cloth for violins, violas, or cellos, it’s preferable to choose one with fine fibers. String instruments like violins are coated with varnish, and using a cloth with coarse fibers might scratch the varnish on the instrument. It’s recommended to use cloths specifically labeled for string instruments. If the product does not mention its intended use, it's best to touch the cloth with your hands to determine if it’s suitable. If it’s as soft as gauze or a towel, it should be safe to use.
Recommended Cleaning Cloth Usage – Using Two Cloths for Different Purposes
It’s recommended to have two cleaning cloths, one for the body of the instrument and one for the bow and strings. Some products come with two cloths, though single-cloth options are also available.
From personal experience, when storing string instruments, I remove rosin from the bow and strings. If there’s only one cloth, after wiping off the rosin, I would need to use the same cloth to wipe the instrument's body, which can sometimes result in the body getting dirty instead.
For this reason, I recommend having two separate cloths—one for wiping off the rosin and one for cleaning the instrument’s body. This way, you can keep both parts of the instrument clean without cross-contaminating them.
