Hello!
Kaoru the composer here!
This time, I'm going to talk about some handy items that will elevate the quality of your home recording!
Recently, not only due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic but also because high-quality gear is becoming affordable, I feel like there’s been a sharp increase in demand for "home recording" (self-recording at home).
Recording at a large studio, gathering musicians, and hiring an engineer for the session... all of that can be very expensive, so it's understandable why home recording has been gaining in popularity.
However, when it comes to home recording, many people might feel that it’s a bit of a challenge to gather all the necessary gear by themselves.
So, here!
I’m going to introduce some recommended items, based on my experience!
The Sonic Maximizer developed using BBE's latest technology.
This red and silver rack is such a stylish design, isn't it?
It’s especially recommended for bassists, but it can also be used in various processes such as guitar and vocal recording or 2MIX processing.
It enhances the clarity of the sound, making the output smoother across all frequencies, from low to high, resulting in a more present sound.
The control panel has a simple setup:
- PROCESS: 5kHz +12dBu boost (high-end processing)
- LO CONTOUR: 50Hz +12dBu boost (low-end processing)
So, anyone can use it easily!
It’s useful in any setting, from live performances to production environments and even listening applications. This makes it a product not only for creators but also for performers!
dbx / 286s Microphone Preamp/Compressor/Enhancer/De-Esser
Professional audio equipment manufacturer dbx has produced many iconic devices. The 286s microphone preamp from dbx is packed with everything you need for vocal recording.
This compact 1U unit includes:
- Microphone preamp
- Compressor
- De-Esser (for sibilance)
- Enhancer
It’s ideal not just for composers, but also for game streamers, YouTubers, and anyone working on video productions.
This single device can be used for a wide range of applications, so beginners don’t need to worry about complicated wiring!
And it’s available for purchase at just ¥17,300 (tax included)! The insane quality for what you get is off the charts!
I’ve personally been using this ambient room filter for about 3 years.
Even after three years of use, the sound-absorbing material (the sponge part) hasn’t fallen apart and remains in excellent condition!
In other words, it’s very durable!
Honestly, at first, I was thinking, "Does it even work?" but... it’s actually pretty great!
I often use it for vocal and acoustic guitar recording, and it significantly reduces the unwanted echo!
Once mixed with other instruments, the effect becomes negligible!
It makes post-processing much easier, reducing tedious tasks and saving time!
Also, since the unit is lightweight, it attaches to the mic stand without wobbling and remains extremely stable!
Note: The angle of the filter cannot be adjusted, so be careful!
ZOOM / B6 Bass Multi-Effects Processor
Newly Released Bass Multi-Effects Processor
Among the main features, what caught my attention the most are the following:
- DI Modeling Function with 4 types (2 tube types, 2 solid-state types) of tones to choose from
- 2-input system that can be switched instantly via footswitch (also supports Piezo pickup input)
- 119 built-in effects, 11 classic amp models, 11 preamp models, and 12 cabinet models
With this, the possibilities for sound creation are endless... in fact, it’s so comprehensive that you might not need any other effect pedals.
Additionally, the dual input system is a great feature for those who use multiple basses in live performances.
It also has the functionality of an audio interface, so you can start recording right away by simply connecting it to your PC!
Steinberg Cubase LE (download license) is included, so even if you don’t have a DAW, you can use it with confidence!
There are still many features I haven’t covered, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out!
LEWITT (Lewitt) / LCT 441 FLEX
A condenser microphone with 8 selectable polar patterns, including reverse polarity patterns.
It’s easy to switch between settings with a button on the body, and you can visually confirm the setting.
By switching the polar pattern depending on the recording scene, this mic can be versatile in various situations.
Not only is it great for recording vocals and instruments, but you can also record environmental sounds.
It comes with a dedicated shock mount, pop filter, and case, and is priced under ¥40,000.
Although it’s a mid-range model in the "LCT" series, I personally love the 441 the most!
A pop shield is a filter that goes between your mouth and the microphone!
It helps with issues like plosives, saliva, and breath sounds.
I recommend the POP SHIELD, a metal pop filter!
The benefits of a metal pop filter are:
- It captures high-frequency sounds clearly
- Easy to clean if saliva hits it
- It has great durability
On the other hand, the benefits of fabric pop filters are:
- They are generally more affordable
- They’re effective at reducing breath sounds
In practice, the compatibility with the microphone is important, so it’s hard to generalize. Please take this as a reference!
That’s it for the recommended items that can improve the quality of your home recording.
With just a little adjustment, you can see significant changes, and it’s fun to experiment and enjoy those changes!
I hope you find your "favorite sound" through trial and error!
