Booming volume, crushing distortion, thunderous low end... an electric guitar is meant to be played with gain!
Drown out all that trendy, fashionable music with a wall of high-gain guitar tones!
...Well, saying that probably won’t make you popular.
But that’s okay!
Sometimes, that’s exactly the point!
With that out of the way, it’s time to take a look at the Fluff Drive, a guitar pedal from the familiar folks at Warm Audio, whose products I’ve reviewed before. This pedal is specifically tuned for genres that thrive on heavy low-end punch, such as heavy metal and loud rock.

When people hear ‘metal pedal’, many immediately think of those ultra-high-gain distortion pedals that practically define the genre.
However, it’s important to note that the Fluff Drive doesn’t provide an extreme amount of distortion on its own.
Instead, it’s designed for players who already generate their core gain from the amplifier and use the pedal primarily as a booster.
What truly sets this pedal apart is its ability to shape the frequency range of down-tuned guitars and 7-string guitars—something that many conventional boost pedals struggle to do effectively.
In addition to the standard controls: Drive (gain/distortion), Level (output volume), and Tone (brightness), the Fluff Drive includes several key features:
- Mid Enhance for boosting mids between 150Hz and 2500Hz
- A switch to place the mid boost either before (PRE) or after (POST) the drive stage
- Low Boost on/off
- Gate on/off with adjustable sensitivity
- 9V/18V operation switch
The amount of control available is impressive, allowing for highly detailed adjustments.
That said, I didn’t feel these controls were intended to create wildly different tonal personalities. Rather, they seem designed to help players dial in the absolute sweet spot for their specific guitar and amplifier setup.

For this review, I used my most powerful-sounding guitar, Gibson Les Paul Tak Burst.
The amplifier was a Mesa/Boogie Mark VII, recorded directly into a DAW using the amp’s built-in cabinet simulation IR.
- Fluff Drive Settings -
- Drrive: 3.0 / Level: 7.0 / Tone: 4.0
- Mid Enhance: 4.0 (PRE)
- Low Boost: ON / Gate: 7.0 (ON)
- Voltage: 18V
The guitar was tuned down a half-step, with the 6th string lowered an additional whole step—a common tuning in many modern heavy music styles.
The Fluff Drive was placed before the amp as a boost. Here are some impressions from several demo performances using this setup.
01 ‘80s LA Metal Style
Even with arpeggiated riffs incorporating palm-muted chords, note definition remains intact and the sound stays tight and articulate.
02 Thrash Metal Style
Fast sixteenth-note riffs retain excellent clarity, and the pedal responds exceptionally well to sudden pinch harmonics.
03 Loud Rock Style
Even add9-based tension chords maintain a pleasing degree of separation, making them very satisfying to play.
04 Hardcore Style
The way this pedal tightens up the low end during rapid down-picked passages is arguably its greatest strength.
05 Mixture Style
Even chords containing tritones or major/minor thirds—which tend to become muddy more easily than standard power chords—remain clear and controlled without falling apart.
Final Thoughts
For this review, I intentionally used a single setting across a wide variety of riffs.
The result was a sound that naturally adapted to every playing style I threw at it.
That’s exactly what you’d expect from a pedal purpose-built for heavier genres.
Playing all these heavy riffs again brought back memories of my student days—sweating through endless practice sessions, chasing tones that were faster, heavier, and more aggressive, with absolutely no concern for being cool or popular.
These days, it’s easier than ever to get great sounds from digital amplifiers.
But guitarists should never forget the feeling of standing in front of a real amp and experiencing the physical impact of air moving from the speaker.
When you need that final push of gain to get there, the Fluff Drive is an excellent choice.
