Audience-Voted Pop Idol Group Auditions

There are some idol groups who have recently debuted like JO1, NiziU, ENHYPEN, etc. Do you know what they have in common?
That’s right. All three groups debuted from a viewer-selected TV audition! One project was called PRODUCE 101 JAPAN SEASON 2 (aka Nichi-Pu2). The goal of that project was to create a Japanese boys idol group. The final round aired on June 13, 2021 and 11 boys were picked as official debut members out of 101 candidates. The new group that formed became INI. This time, I am going to explain the charms of the TV competition by introducing Nichi-Pu2!

Point ① The viewers’ dedicated participation will lead to the debut of their favorite candidates!

On the TV show Nichi-Pu2, official debut members were chosen only by the audience voting, and the audience was called “Citizen Producer” (aka “Koku-Pu”). So the viewers, the Koku-Pu, have the fate of all the candidates in the palm of their hands. Therefore, the fans of each candidate unite and send in votes through social media such as Twitter to help their favorite members win a debut. In short, the more viewers who vote, the closer the candidates win an official debut. Of course, the candidates think, “I really wanna debut”, and the audience thinks, “I really wanna help them debut.” This show creates a sense of unity and a lasting impression for both viewers and candidates because the dreams of viewers and candidates are the same, and that is the most beautiful part of this show.

Point ② Everyone can watch the growth of his/her favorite candidate!

There are many candidates who have never professionally sung, danced, or rapped. Although the performances were difficult for the contestants at first, the performances got better and more sophisticated as the final episode came to a close. You cannot help but want to support all of them just by imagining how much gruelling effort is required from each candidate. In the middle of the audition, the performance video of the candidates who have not even made their debut yet has already hit an exceptional 6.48 million views (as of July 31st).
