What is Acoustic Guitar?

Acoustic guitar refers not only to acoustic guitars strung with bronze and metal strings, but also includes classical guitars strung with nylon strings. This can be a bit confusing. Generally, guitars using metal strings are called acoustic guitars, while those using nylon strings are referred to as classical guitars. That’s right! There are different types of body shapes. The shapes are often distinguished based on the names given by leading acoustic guitar brands like Martin and Gibson.
The most iconic shape is Martin’s Dreadnought. Most people think of this shape when they hear ‘acoustic guitar’. The term ‘dreadnought’ originally refers to a battleship. The large body produces a loud sound even when played acoustically.
Furthermore, Gibson’s Jumbo, which has an even larger body, is appealing for its louder sound and wild appearance.
For smaller body shapes, there are also models like 000 (Triple O) and 00 (Double O) with a gourd-like shape.
A larger body is suitable for a wild sound and is good for strumming, while a smaller body is preferred by fingerstyle players due to its better response and sound separation. If you’re unsure about the shape, choosing the Dreadnought type, which is widely sold by many brands, is a safe bet.

To amplify an acoustic guitar through a guitar amp, a pickup is needed to convert the guitar’s sound into an electrical signal. If you’re practicing at home, an acoustic guitar without a pickup (pure acoustic guitar) might be sufficient since it produces a significant sound on its own. You can always purchase and install a pickup later if needed. Of course, if you want to perform in front of an audience right away, an acoustic guitar with a pickup (acoustic-electric guitar) is recommended.
