A Palm-sized electronic saxophone that can be practiced anytime, anywhere
Being able to easily carry your own instrument and practice anytime is a big draw. However, the size and weight of the saxophone can feel like a bottleneck for saxophone players. The Travel Sax 2 was made to solve such problems. In this article, I will introduce the features, practical usage, and how the Travel Sax 2 is actually used.
What is the Travel Sax 2?
The Travel Sax 2 is a lightweight and compact electronic saxophone (digital saxophone) developed by the Spanish startup company Odisei Music. Originally, the first Travel Sax model became a crowd-funding hit, and the Travel Sax 2 is the result of further improvements. Featuring a minimalist design with an overall length of approximately 24 cm (not including the mouthpiece), it has achieved unparalleled portability while maintaining the basic playing functions required by saxophone players.
Features of the Travel Sax 2
1. Lightweight and compact design
The Travel Sax 2 weighs a mere 335g! The weight of an alto saxophone is approximately 2.5kg, which makes this little nugget about one-seventh the weight of an alto saxophone. The overall length is also compact at approximately 24cm, which is about the size of a 500ml plastic bottle.
It can be easily carried on trips and business trips, eliminating the problem of “I want to practice but my instrument is too bulky.”
2. Touch and handling
The mouthpiece for the Travel Sax 2 is the same as for the acoustic saxophone. The included mouthpiece is also for alto. Of course, you can also use your own rubber mouthpiece (standard size). It also comes with adapters for soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophone mouthpieces, so you can practice with the mouthpiece you always use.
The way it is pronounced, the mouthpiece is only used to blow into the breath control sensor, so that sound is produced when you breathe into it.
The key arrangement conforms to that of a saxophone, with High-F# and front F keys. The steel spring action provides a feel similar to that of a saxophone. (The keys themselves are made of resin, so they produce an operating noise).
The key responds with an optical sensor. Therefore, you will feel a better response compared to the touch-sensor type electronic saxophones of the past. (I personally think this is a very significant point here.)
3. (Of course) silent practice is possible
Sound is played from the built-in speaker or headphones. Practice can be done without worrying about your surroundings, even at night or in places where sound is a concern, such as apartment complexes. This allows you to continue daily practice without compromising your lifestyle.
4. Enjoy a wide range of functions in conjunction with apps
Because Travel Sax 2's greatest feature is its compact design, tones, effects, and other operations are controlled via your smartphone or tablet.
Pairing is as easy as following the app screen. The app screen is in English, but the operation is intuitive, so even I could do it even though I am not good at English!
There are not only saxophone tones such as alto, tenor, and soprano, but also other sounds such as clarinet, flute, and the sound of waves (?). Other sounds are also available. Furthermore, as a MIDI controller, it is compatible with “Pro Tools”, “Garage Band”, “Logic ProX”, and “Ableton Live”.
5. Long battery life
Battery life lasts as long as 6 hours, allowing for long hours of practice. Another convenient feature is that the battery can be easily recharged via a USB-C cable.
Trying It Out for Myself
Tones
The Travel Sax 2 is only a practice tool, so it doesn’t have realistic tones like a real saxophone. However, it has more than 50 preset tones, so you can enjoy trying out different sounds!
Saxophone Touch
You can use a saxophone mouthpiece for playing, but it is only for breathing. The reed does not vibrate or require embouchure. (So even if you remove the mouthpiece and blow directly into the connection, it will still sound!)
Breath resistance and other settings can be adjusted with a dedicated app, so you can customize it to your liking.
In addition
You can also adjust the angle of the mouthpiece and extend the distance with optional parts. Although this is only a practice tool, the detailed customization is a point that you won’t find in other electronic saxophones!
Design
The minimalist design is so cool! It’s very convenient to place it on a side table or desk for quick practice in your spare time or before going to bed.
When you play a saxophone, you have to assemble the instrument, set up the reeds, etc... It takes a lot of time to prepare. Considering that, I think the biggest attraction is that you can take it out and practice right away.
