Here’s a look at what sets the HD 400 PRO apart, and how it’s ideally suited for the production environment.
Revolutionary “Balance of Lightness and Sound Quality”

Upon unboxing, the first impression is just how light these headphones are: the HD 400 PRO weighs only 240g. While some on-ear models come in lighter, this level of weight is exceptional for over-ear headphones that cover the entire ear. Without any metal parts, the build’s dedication to lightweight design is immediately evident.
In audio gear, there’s often a correlation between weight and sound quality, so one might wonder if something so light could really deliver. So did I, however, any doubts quickly dissipate.
The sound profile offers a “monitor sound” with a flat response from low to high frequencies—tight and responsive with no coloration. Both the low and high ranges are free from exaggeration, allowing listeners to hear the source audio as it truly is. While the high range might feel reserved without the usual boost, this clarity reveals the genuine tone of the audio.
Despite the light build, the HD 400 PRO provides a solid, tight low end. Unlike lighter on-ear headphones, which can struggle with low-end response due to less ear-cupping pressure, the HD 400 PRO’s over-ear design delivers consistent bass without instability.
Unlike some audio headphones, which may excel in certain genres but not others, the HD 400 PRO’s balanced, wide frequency response (6-38,000Hz) makes it a versatile tool that works for nearly any genre. Even if you own multiple headphones, the HD 400 PRO is reliable enough to serve as a foundational reference.
Design and Specs Enabling Long Sessions Comparable to Speaker Monitoring

<Open-Back Design Reduces Long-Wear Fatigue>
Even high-quality headphones can become uncomfortable during extended sessions. In closed-back models, good sound often comes at the cost of increased pressure, which can lead to fatigue. While I’m a fan of closed-back headphones, trying open-back monitor headphones again was a revelation—minimal pressure and maximum comfort.
These headphones are so comfortable that, after long hours, I forgot I was even wearing them, staying fully immersed in sound crafting. At one point, I felt the need to double-check on speakers just to confirm the results, finally removing the headphones.

<Forward-Tilted Driver Units>
I believe three factors contribute to the HD 400 PRO’s seamless feel, closely resembling a speaker environment. While the lightweight build and open-back design are part of it, the third factor is the driver mounting technique.
Looking inside the ear cups, you’ll notice that the HD 400 PRO’s drivers are angled slightly forward. Although subtle, this small tilt significantly reduces the sense of disconnect from a speaker environment.
With headphones, sounds panned 100% often feel as though they extend past the ears, creating an overly wide image compared to speakers. Thanks to the HD 400 PRO’s slight forward tilt, sound remains within a reasonable spread, providing a sense of space closer to that of a speaker setup.
Integration with dearVR MIX to Recreate a Speaker Environment on Headphones

<Dear Reality dearVR MIX>
The HD 400 PRO can also be used with Dear Reality’s dearVR MIX plugin, which recreates a speaker-like experience in headphones. This plugin allows for mixing in an ideal room setup defined by Dear Reality, as well as playback checks in challenging environments, such as car stereos, living rooms, or kitchen while wearing headphones.

The plugin’s Headphone Compensation feature adjusts EQ settings to match headphone characteristics, and HD 400 PRO is an available model. While the HD 400 PRO offers robust monitoring on its own, integrating it with dearVR MIX could expand its usability further.
The dearVR MIX plugin can be purchased directly from Dear Reality (separate from Sennheiser’s support), and inquiries must be directed to Dear Reality in English.

<Solid Build Quality and Practical Features>
Overall, the HD 400 PRO is meticulously designed for professional music production despite its lightweight appearance. The robust construction, including durable moving parts, provides peace of mind and ease of use, sometimes even more so than heavier headphones.

<Two Interchangeable Cables Included>
On a practical note, the HD 400 PRO includes both coiled and straight cables. This feature allows for versatility in use and easy replacement in case of damage, making the headphones a potentially long-lasting companion.
One cautionary note for the uninitiated:
Like all open-back headphones, the HD 400 PRO leaks sound, so it’s unsuitable for recording monitoring. Additionally, the HD 400 PRO has a high impedance of 120Ω, which requires a powerful headphone amp for optimal performance. Lower-output amps or affordable audio interfaces might not supply enough volume.
With these points considered, the HD 400 PRO could deliver reference-quality sound comparable to high-end monitor speakers.
