The saxophone is a popular wind instrument, known for being a standout solo instrument.
Its captivating tone, along with a glimmery golden body makes it the star of any stage, drawing people in just by looking at it.

Simply saying, "I play the saxophone as a hobby," somehow sounds cool, doesn’t it?

In fact, the saxophone is an instrument anyone can easily start learning.
Many people might have the assumption that wind instruments are difficult to play, but the saxophone is not as high a barrier as one may think. If you’re drawn to it, consider giving it a try.

■ Not Just for Classical and Brass Band Music – The Saxophone Takes the Lead in J-POP and Jazz Too!

Nowadays, the saxophone is performed in a variety of genres, including J-POP, rock, brass band music, jazz, and classical, without being limited to any one style.
This shows that the saxophone’s unique sound is highly regarded as a solo instrument, offering a wide range of expressive possibilities.

It can produce a deep, dark tone, as well as a bright, shimmering sound, and even an elegant, soaring tone that seems to float higher and higher.

In recent years, many performance videos have been uploaded to video platforms like YouTube, and the large number of saxophone players clearly indicates the growing popularity of the instrument.

■ Why the Sound of the Saxophone is So Attractive

The saxophone has a fascinating history that makes it quite cool from the beginning.

Its official name is the "saxophone," and it was invented in the early 1840s by a Belgian man named Adolphe Sax.
When it comes to woodwind instruments, everyone knows the clarinet, flute, and oboe, while brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, horn, and tuba.

You might think, "Wait, isn’t the saxophone made of metal? Shouldn’t it be a brass instrument?"

But actually, the saxophone is considered a woodwind instrument.
The mechanism that causes the instrument to vibrate fundamentally is similar to that of other woodwind instruments, which is why it’s classified as one.
However, since the body of the instrument is made of metal and also incorporates elements of brass, the saxophone is unique in this regard.
The reason for this lies in the fact that the saxophone was created for brass bands.

Before the saxophone was invented, brass bands used large, bright-sounding brass instruments and woodwind instruments with deep, warm tones, but these sounds didn’t blend well together. The instability of the sound was compensated by how well skilled the performers were.
However, in the search for a more harmonious sound, Adolphe Sax created the saxophone, which was then adopted by brass bands.

This allowed brass band music to achieve a more cohesive sound and significantly broadened its expressive range.
As a result, the saxophone possesses both the power to produce large, bright sounds like a brass instrument and the ability to create deep, warm tones like a woodwind instrument.

The saxophone is performed in various scenes, and its diverse tonal qualities are a result of the instrument's design, which is specifically created to specialize in changes of tone and expression, with the goal of achieving harmonious sound.

■ How Do You Play the Saxophone? Is It Easy to Produce Sound?

The saxophone, which supports brass bands and can produce various sounds, is actually quite easy to produce sound from.
In fact, when you join a brass band as a beginner, the saxophone is often the first instrument you can make sound with.

The basic mechanism for producing sound on the saxophone lies in the mouthpiece at the end of the instrument.
The mouthpiece is equipped with a reed and a ligature.

Sound is created when the vibration from the reed is transmitted as sound waves to the ear, and the part responsible for producing the vibration is the mouthpiece, reed, and ligature.
This setup is similar to that of a clarinet.

The reed is a thinly cut material, similar to bamboo, and is harvested from a plant called cane.
The reed is pressed against the mouthpiece and held in place by the ligature.
When you blow air into it, it’s like breathing air through a straw (without tightening it too much), and then the sound will emerge.
This happens when you blow air and the reed acts as a lid on the mouthpiece, and the air inside the instrument resists pushing the reed open.
The continuous opening and closing of the reed creates vibrations, which then translate into sound.

Although this may sound complex in writing, it’s actually not a difficult motion to perform.

■ From Assembly to Packing Up: How to Transport the Saxophone

Assembling and packing away the saxophone is easy even for beginners.

The body and neck (the part connected to the mouthpiece) can be detached, and in the instrument case, the body, neck, and mouthpiece are each stored separately.
This means that even with a larger case, it’s still easy to transport the saxophone, even on a light bicycle.
Shoulder bags are also available for convenient transport, making it easier to carry the saxophone while walking or cycling.

When assembling the saxophone, simply attach the neck and mouthpiece, then connect them to the body. It only takes about three minutes to complete.

When packing it away, reverse the process, detach the parts, and use a special cleaning swab to wipe away any moisture inside the instrument and mouthpiece.
Next, use cleaning paper or a cloth to wipe any water droplets from the keys and pads.
Since the saxophone is sensitive to moisture, it’s important to remove as much water as possible.

■ Summary

The saxophone is an instrument that can be enjoyed across various genres.
It’s perfect for those who want to freely play phrases from J-POP, rock, or Showa-era songs, as well as for those who are interested in starting a more serious journey into jazz or classical music. The saxophone is also a great choice for those who want to join a brass band or be given a solo role in brass band performances.

The saxophone’s ability to add harmony to brass band music makes it an ideal instrument for people with a gentle and calm personality, as well as for those who want to express their individuality through more soloistic genres like jazz and rock.

If you’re drawn to the sound of the saxophone, why not start learning it now?
