Hello!
Kaoru the composer here!
One of the questions I often get from people who are just starting out with DTM is…
“What kind of equipment should I buy on a 100,000-yen budget??”
So, I’ve decided to think about it!
Of course, the equipment you choose will vary depending on the genre of music you want to produce, but this time I’ll be picking out items aimed at creating an environment suitable for music programming (MIDI production).
In other words, I’m not placing much importance on recording equipment!
(By the way, this is assuming that you own a computer!)
I hope this will be helpful for those who are just about to start using DTM!
Alright then, let’s get started!!
STEINBERG / Cubase Artist 11 Standard Edition DAW Software
First, the most important item in DTM is the DAW!
You can’t start without it!
The one I recommend is, of course, Cubase!
Given the budget, I chose the standard-grade version.
■ Reasons for Choosing It
○ Widely Used in Japan
Among the many DAWs available, this one is extremely popular in Japan, so there’s a wealth of information out there. Even if you encounter common beginner troubleshooting like no sound coming out or you’re not even sure how to install it, you can easily find solutions by searching online.
Many people give up during the installation stage, so I highly recommend starting out with Cubase!
○ A “Versatile” DAW Not Limited by Genre
Cubase is one of the most versatile DAWs out there.
It’s also used in professional studios and music production companies, so if you haven’t yet decided what kind of music you want to make, you can’t go wrong by choosing this one!
○ Excellent Built-in Sounds and Effects
Cubase comes with a wide variety of built-in sounds.
In particular, HALion Sonic SE 3 is a multi-timbral instrument that includes numerous types of sounds.
It covers all the standard instruments like piano, guitar, bass, drums, and more.
It also comes with a full set of built-in effects like compressors, equalizers, and amp simulators!
○ Equipped with VariAudio 3
The VariAudio 3 feature, which was previously available only in Cubase Pro, is now included in Cubase Artist and also supports ARA2.
This VariAudio 3 is an excellent tool for audio editing.
It can handle all types of audio material.
While the standard grade has some functional limitations, they are absolutely not a problem for beginners.
You can also upgrade later if needed!
Price: Approximately 32,000 yen.
FOCUSRITE / Scarlett Solo (Gen. 3) Audio Interface
This is the Scarlett Solo that’s famous for its high performance for the price.
Since this setup is intended to create an environment for MIDI programming, I purposely chose a model with the minimum necessary input and output.
Many people ask me, “Do I really need this if I’m not recording?” and my answer is yes, it’s essential!
Another great point is that the included software bundle is incredibly generous!
In particular, the piano sound source Addictive Keys by XLN Audio is fantastic!
Price: Approximately 14,000 yen.
KORG / microKEY2-49
I chose a 49-key size, just right for MIDI programming.
Even if you say, “I can’t play the keyboard!” I would say that a MIDI keyboard is almost an essential item!
It’s useful not only for checking sounds during sound design but also for functions like switching with key switches.
What I pay attention to is the key feel!
The keys are designed to be neither too heavy nor too light, which helps reduce mistakes while playing.
Note: Pianists may find the feel a bit unusual, so keep that in mind!
Price: Approximately 11,500 yen.
IK MULTIMEDIA / iLoud Micro Monitor Compact Reference Monitor
Despite its low price, these monitors are loved by many professionals.
Although compact, they have an amazingly wide frequency range!
They provide accurate reproduction and precise sound imaging.
A flat, uncolored sound is essential for music production!
They can also be used as Bluetooth speakers, making them perfect for music listening as well.
Price: Approximately 35,000 yen.
AKG / K92 Closed-Back Headphones
These closed-back headphones reproduce sound beautifully and naturally with AKG’s traditional wide-range sound.
The black and gold color scheme is elegant and stylish!
The headband gently wraps around your head, providing excellent comfort.
They are lightweight, making them suitable for long listening or working sessions!
They can be used for a wide range of applications, from composition to mastering.
Price: Approx. 8,000 yen.
That concludes my carefully selected gear that can be bought within a 100,000-yen budget.
While writing this article, I realized… you can assemble so much equipment for just 100,000 yen!
It’s truly surprising!
If you’re unsure which equipment to buy and are feeling lost, I hope this article serves as a helpful reference!!
