When you think of instruments that are often seen at music recitals, what comes to mind?
There are so many options such as glockenspiels, xylophones, recorders, melodicas, and more! The first one that comes to my mind is the handbell ☆
Sometimes one person plays multiple notes by switching bells, and sometimes each person is in charge of a single note and plays together in a group.
The basic set includes 8 notes: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do. But there are also sets that cover a wider range. Let's dive right into these recommended handbells!
PLAYTECH / PHB300 Handbell
Here is a one-octave, 8-note set! Each note is color-coded, making it bright and visually appealing ♡
When you ring the bell, it produces a sparkling tone that children are sure to love.
With just one octave, you can play simple nursery songs like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “Mary Had a Little Lamb”!
For children, being able to play familiar songs by themselves is definitely a fun experience!
PLAYTECH / PHB100 Handbell – Dual Use for Handheld and Desktop
This looks almost identical to the PHB300 I mentioned earlier, but what’s the difference…?
It can be used in two ways: as a handheld type where you grip the handle and shake to make sound, and as a desktop type where you press from above while the bell is placed on a table.
Since you can choose a playing style that suits the age group, it’s perfect for different age ranges or for long-term use ☆
ZENON / CBR-20 (Music Bell 20-Piece Set) Handbell
For those who need a wider range, here's a 20-note set that includes accidentals (#)!
It’s recommended for more people playing together, or when the range of the song being performed isn’t covered by just 8 notes ☆ The accidentals have black grips, making them easy to identify at a glance.
Also, even the same song can sound quite different depending on the key. Once you’ve mastered easy-to-play keys like C major, try challenging yourself with something brighter like G major!
ZENON / MB-G27N Handbell
Compared to the handbells I introduced so far, this one has a much more elegant appearance!
The striking design features gold plating, giving it a luxurious look ☆
If you’re thinking, “I want not just a beautiful sound, but a dazzling appearance too!”, then this handbell is for you!
The price is a bit higher, but that comes with an expanded range of expression and the ability to create even more beautiful performances!
SUZUKI / MBD-5 Bell Harmony Handbell Desk Type
Here is a set of handbells that includes only the accidentals: C♯, D♯, F♯, G♯, A♯!
It’s perfect for those who already own the basic 8-note set and want to add just the accidentals.
Since the bell section features a two-tone gradient, it’s easy to distinguish from the natural notes (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do), providing peace of mind.
With more notes to play, the fun of performing with handbells increases, and it also makes a stronger lasting impression on those who are listening!
How was it?
Even though I’m referring to "handbells" as a general term, there are many variations in range and playing style, so try to find the perfect one for you♪
Many of you might be planning school recitals or Christmas events, so
I hope this guide helps you choose the right handbells!
