The mouthpiece is an important part in creating sound and tone. Many of you might have already known about it, but I guess many people still don’t know what types of mouthpieces to use!
In this article, I would like to introduce to you some standard recommended models of trumpet mouthpieces.
First, let’s take a look at how each part of the mouthpiece affects the sound.
■ Structure of the Mouthpiece

Name of the Part | Features | |
---|---|---|
Cup | Shallow Brighter tone and easier to produce high notes. Quieter volume. |
Deep Darker tone and easier to produce lower notes. Louder volume. |
Cup Inner Diameter (Rim Diameter) | Small Easier Easier to produce high notes and has greater durability. Quieter volume. |
Large Easier to produce lower notes. Louder volume. |
Rim Contour | Thick and wide Easier to produce high notes and less tiring. Less flexibility of the lips. |
Thin and narrow More flexible controllability. More tiring from pressure built up. |
Rim Bite | Sharp (steep) Precise, stable sound and a rich tone. If the rim bite is too steep, it interferes with lip flexibility. |
Gentle steepness (round) Production can sound muffled at the beginning of the note. Harder to keep the pitch. |
