Direct boxes play an important part in a variety of applications including PA systems and recording.
Since a variety of models are available from many manufacturers, many people might not know which one they should get.
I’m going to introduce the 10 most popular DI boxes at Sound House.
There must be reasons why these models are popular! I hope you’ll refer to this list when you are choosing a DI box!
■ Active DI Boxes
BOSS / DI-1
A standard model that everybody in Japan knows about!
BOSS, a world-famous guitar effector brand, has a long history with the DI box. It features auto power ON/OFF function, where the power automatically turns off when there’s no input signal. The attenuator has two levels, -20dB and -40dB. A model that shines with solid Made-in-Japan technology.
RUPERT NEVE DESIGNS / RNDI
A DI box bearing the name of NEVE -- the RNDI. The RNDI adds nothing to the signal, outputting only the inherent sound of instruments themselves. The controls are simply designed and easy enough even for beginners to understand. A high-performance DI box that provides reliable sound quality.
RADIAL / J48
One thing that can be said about RADIAL is that they have a rich lineup.
How many active DI boxes models alone are there......?
The J48 features stereo-to-monaural merge. At first glance, it’s a one-channel DI box, but you can actually input signals via both INPUT and THRU, and pressing the merge switch allows you to output the mixed signals.
CLASSIC PRO / CDI-1A Direct box
WARM AUDIO / DIRECT BOX ACTIVE
■ Passive DI Boxes
RADIAL / PRO D2
RADIAL has many popular passive DI box models, and the PRO D2 is especially popular. Affordable, highly reliable, compact and lightweight, it deserves to be on the "honor roll."
CLASSIC PRO / CDI-2P
The incredible cost performance of CLASSIC PRO extends to passive models, too! Especially the CDI-2P stereo model is explosively popular. Like the active model, the moment you pick it up, you’ll feel a quality that is unimaginable at this price. It features a more natural sound than its Active counterpart. It’s also recommended for PA systems as it also supports stereo instruments such as keyboards.
RADIAL / JDI
dbx / DJDI
dbx is a brand that is well known as an EQ and speaker processor manufacturer, but in fact it also offers DI box and the DJDI is as popular as the RADIAL / PRO D2! The main feature of this model is that it has a continuous variable attenuator. A typical DI box has a PAD switch and the attenuation value is constant, but DJDI can be fine-tuned according to the instrument.
BAE / PDI
BAE is a brand that is valued highly for its NEVE-conscious high-end outboards. Their DI box is no exception, and they’re handmade one by one in California. As with their outboards, only strictly selected parts, such as Carnhill transformers, are used. It’s a little-known popular model that receives continuous orders!
So, what do you think? There are still many other popular models at Sound House, and I picked only the most popular ones. I hope those who weren’t sure of which model they should buy purchase found this helpful.
