[Product Review] Warm Audio WA-47jr SE by Ryoji Saito

The number “47” is also an indispensable presence when talking about the history of recording.

This unit, which inherits that name, is a FET-type jr model that does not require an external power supply.

This time, I conducted a test recording at Gumbo Studio, a recording studio that I regularly work with for my day-to-day projects.

For this session, I recorded an acoustic guitar and my own voice to evaluate it.
For comparison, I recorded it alongside a SHURE SM58.

My first impression was, “Oh!”—the sense of a low center of gravity.

It takes a different approach from overly bright, inexpensive condenser microphones, firmly capturing the core and body of the sound.

It has punch and a high density.

There’s also a vintage-like sensuality to it, and I was surprised that this level of texture could be achieved in this price range.

Acoustic Guitar

With acoustic guitar, the resonance and thickness of the body come through naturally.

The sound doesn’t become thin and it doesn’t get buried in an ensemble.

I think it pairs well not only with rock, but also with roots-oriented music.

Vocal

On vocals, it gives the impression of combining the level of detail you’d expect from a condenser microphone with the strong forward push of a dynamic mic.

It has strong musical persuasiveness and seems like it would match extremely well with atmospheric songs.

I also felt it would really shine in situations where you want both airiness and density, such as with brass instruments.

Overall Impression

The phrase “a mic with sensual character” fits this mic perfectly.

Not only does it sound great, but it also looks good, satisfying the desire to own it.

It’s a model I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a character microphone.
