Terry Hall, the vocalist of The Specials, has passed away, the official social networking site of The Specials announced. He was 63 years old. He was known for his work with The Specials, a ska group that blossomed out of the punk and new wave scene.
And he took the UK by storm with their epoch-making live performances in which he brought the audience to dance with them on stage. The Specials' live performance style, which even included a hasty change of venue to a disco in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district for some of their Tokyo shows, has become one of the most legendary in the history of Western music in Japan. After leaving the Specials, he worked energetically, releasing Color Field and solo albums and collaborating with various artists, including Tricky. Different musicians influenced by the Specials in later years, from Elvis Costello, Madness, The Beat, and other contemporary artists with the Specials to Happy Mondays, Rancid, and others, have issued memorial comments.
In honor of Terry Hall, who has left many beautiful works on the UK rock scene, we offer our heartfelt condolences by presenting a classic from his masterful 1994 solo album.
