Up until just recently, I was using the air con, but lately I’ve been living with the heater on. I feel like there are only a few days a year when I can get by without any climate control…
Now then, this time I would like to introduce an effects pedal that has really caught my attention. Here it is!
This time, I would like to test its capabilities with some progressive metal-style chugging riffs—where, in my opinion, a noise gate really shines!
01.Setting
The connection order is: Guitar → Scutum Noise Gate → AXE FX3. There are various opinions about where to place the noise gate, but personally, I feel that putting it after the distortion changes the sound, so I basically place it before the distortion. Even with this connection, the noise gate is still very effective. As for the unit’s settings, since I want a sharp, tight muting response that follows my hand muting, I’ve set it to HARD mode.

02.Now, the comparison!
Let’s have a listen and compare!
a. Without noise gate
b. With noise gate
How was it? You can probably hear the buzzing noise when the gate is off. By applying the gate, that noise is drastically reduced!
03.Summary
The PLAYTECH “Scutum Noise Gate” can definitely be used for progressive metalcore!
By turning up the knob, the gate effect becomes stronger, so if you want to reduce the noise between muted parts as much as possible, you can turn it up a bit more. However, be careful — if you raise it too much because even your regular sound may become muted. It’s definitely a piece of gear that enhances the sharpness of your breaks, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out!
