There are many different types of bass drum heads. At Sound House, we offer over 300 products, including an assortment of sizes! This time, I will introduce the classic clear and coated heads, as well as the popular heads from EVANS and REMO. Be sure to check them out as a reference for choosing the right head for your needs.
1. Coated Heads
Coated heads feature a textured white surface that’s commonly used in jazz performances. These offer a great balance between attack and sustain, making them very popular. Depending on the thickness and number of plies of the film, they tend to provide a warmer tone.
EVANS / BD22UV1 UV1 Coated 22-inch
The UV series features EVANS' proprietary UV-cured coating, providing excellent durability. This head delivers a balanced attack, long sustain, and bright tone, making it a great choice for many drummers.
REMO / 122B-JP Coated Ambassador Bass Drum Head 22-inch
The Coated Ambassador is a staple for snare drum heads and it offers a warm, open sound with a bright attack. Known for its versatility and rich tonal quality.
In addition to the standard coated heads mentioned above, there are also heads with a ring around the edge, similar to some clear heads. The ring around the edge helps control overtones and while it retains the warmth typical of coated heads, it results in a relatively tighter tone.

2. Clear Heads
Clear heads, made from transparent film, are commonly used in rock bands. They are known for their quick attack, clear, bright, and open sound, making them ideal for those looking for a sharp and immediate tone.
EVANS / BD22G1 G1 Clear 22-inch
The G1 series offers a bright tone and a balanced sustain. When tuned low, it brings out the natural resonance of the shell, providing a rich, full sound while maintaining clarity.
REMO / C-22B Clear Ambassador Bass Drum Head 22-inch
The Clear Ambassador series is known for its quick attack and bright, open tone. It’s a popular choice for both bass drums and bottom heads, offering excellent tone projection and clarity.
As with the coated heads, clear heads are also available with rings around the edge. This ring helps maintain the bright sound of the clear head while producing a relatively tighter tone.

EVANS / BD22EMAD EMAD Clear 22-inch
The EMAD series comes with removable foam mutes in two sizes that can be adjusted on-site without having to change the head. This allows for quick modifications based on the venue or the music being played. In addition to the 1-ply clear version, the EMAD series offers a variety of options including 2-ply, different thicknesses, coated, UV-coated, and vintage-looking calf tone heads. This versatility makes it a popular choice for drummers looking for customizable sounds in different playing environments.
REMO / P3-322B Powerstroke 3 clear
The classic REMO bass drum head is the Powerstroke 3. The structure of the edge provides a muted effect, delivering a clear attack and a heavy sound.
This time, I introduced standard bass drum heads. With differences in thickness and number of films, as well as structural variations by manufacturer to achieve muted effects, drum heads have a lot of depth... Be sure to find your favorite head at Sound House!
