We are truly living in the age of wireless earphones. Every manufacturer is developing and releasing models packed with unique features. Among them, the SONY WF-1000XM Series has consistently impressed users with new innovations every time a new generation is released.
Traditionally launched on a roughly two-year cycle, the series went quiet for three years following the release of the WF-1000XM5 in 2023. Now, in 2026, SONY has finally unveiled its latest flagship model: the WF-1000XM6. In this review, I’ll take a closer look at what it has to offer.
My History with Earphones
I’ve been a longtime SONY earphone user. In fact, I still remember buying my very first pair of SONY wired earphones at a local electronics store when I was in junior high school.
As someone who preferred wired earphones, I didn’t become interested in wireless models until the COVID era. Wearing a mask and wired earphones at the same time was often inconvenient whenever I needed to remove earphones or mask. That was when I decided it was finally time to switch to wireless earphones.
The model I chose was the WF-1000XM4. Looking back, I’ve consistently used SONY wireless earphones ever since.
Basic Specifications
Let’s start by comparing the WF-1000XM6 with its predecessor, the WF-1000XM5.

Other improvements include approximately 25% greater noise reduction and improved connection stability thanks to a larger wireless antenna.
While the specifications alone may not suggest a dramatic leap forward, earphones are often about more than numbers, so let’s dive deeper.
Changes in Design
One of the most noticeable differences is the size and shape of both the earphones and charging case. Both have become slightly larger compared to the XM5. However, that doesn’t mean the XM6 is less comfortable. In fact, its width has been reduced by approximately 11%, and the design has been refined based on ergonomic principles, resulting in a more secure and comfortable fit.
The revised internal ventilation structure not only improves comfort but also significantly reduces body-conducted noise. Personally, this was one of the most impressive upgrades.
With the XM5, I could hear the thumping sound of my footsteps while walking. With the XM6, those sounds are almost completely gone. Depending on the environment, it’s easy to forget you’re even walking because the footstep noise is so minimal.
Noise Canceling Performance

One of the biggest reasons I originally chose the WF-1000XM Series was its noise-canceling performance.
Interestingly, the XM6 reduces passive noise isolation due to its more open ventilation design. You might think that would weaken the noise canceling, but SONY has significantly enhanced the active noise-canceling system to compensate. As a result, the XM6 maintains excellent noise reduction while reducing ear pressure and improving overall comfort. The increase from three to four microphones per side also contributes to the improved performance.
I commute by train every day, and compared to the XM5, train noise feels noticeably quieter. During less noisy moments—such as when the train is just starting to move—it often feels almost completely silent. There were times I found myself looking out the window just to confirm whether the train was moving or stopped.
Ambient Sound Mode

This is another area where the XM6 has improved significantly.
On the XM5, ambient sound levels were set manually through the app. Whether you were sitting in a quiet café or standing next to a construction site, the same amount of outside sound would be passed through. With the XM6, enabling Automatic Ambient Sound allows the earphones to intelligently adjust the amount of ambient audio depending on your surroundings. In a quiet café, more outside sound can be allowed in, while noisy environments can be filtered more aggressively. Sensitivity can also be adjusted within the app.
The Voice Focus feature is another welcome addition, allowing you to hear voices and announcements more clearly while keeping noise canceling active.
Sound Quality

The WF-1000XM6 was tuned with the involvement of four renowned mastering engineers in pursuit of the highest possible sound quality. The biggest reason I’ve continued using SONY earphones over the years is simple: sound quality. Engineers such as Randy Merrill, who mastered Kenshi Yonezu’s “Iris Out”, contributed to the tuning process. Their involvement helps bring listeners closer to hearing music as artists intended.
For compressed audio sources, SONY’s DSEE Extreme technology uses AI to restore lost detail and improve sound quality. Although this feature was already present on the XM5, the XM6 continues to deliver a level of nuance and detail that many competing earphones struggle to match.
The App

All settings are managed through SONY’s familiar Sony Sound Connect app. One major improvement is the equalizer. The XM5 offers a 5-band EQ, while the XM6 expands this to a 10-band EQ, giving users much more precise control over their sound.
The popular Find Your Equalizer feature also remains available, automatically creating a personalized EQ profile through a simple guided process.
The app also continues to support Scene-based Listening, which automatically delivers music and useful information based on your routines and locations. Weather forecasts and station announcements can be particularly helpful when noise canceling makes environmental sounds harder to hear. The more you use it during your daily commute or routine, the more personalized the experience becomes—almost like training your earphones.
Charging Features

Although wireless charging has been available since the WF-1000XM4, it was actually a feature I never took advantage of. Perhaps because it isn’t new anymore, I noticed that while SONY highlights it on the official product page, very few reviews or videos seem to mention it.
The WF-1000XM6 supports Qi wireless charging, meaning you can simply place the charging case on a compatible Qi or Qi2 charger and charging begins automatically. In my setup, wireless charging worked even with a protective case attached (although compatibility may vary depending on the case, so it’s worth checking before purchasing).
The earphones can also be charged using compatible Xperia smartphones that support Battery Share. As an iPhone user, I wasn’t able to try this feature myself, but being able to top up the battery quickly while away from home sounds incredibly convenient.
My Real-World Impressions
So far, I’ve been discussing the WF-1000XM6 based on its specifications and features. However, since it’s such a popular model, there are already countless reviews available online, and much of what I’ve covered may already be familiar to those considering a purchase.
With that in mind, I’d like to shift gears and share my personal impressions as someone who has been using SONY wireless earphones since the WF-1000XM4.
● Outstanding Sound Quality
The very first thing that stands out is the incredible sound quality. Compared to the XM5, the drivers feel even more capable, delivering greater impact in the low end while maintaining impressive clarity and sparkle in the highs.
To be honest, before purchasing the WF-1000XM6, I was torn between it and the Apple AirPods Pro 3. Most of the devices I use daily are part of the Apple ecosystem—including an iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch—so if seamless integration and convenience were the only priorities, the AirPods would probably have the edge. However, SONY’s sound quality is what ultimately won me over. The sound that first made me a fan of SONY’s wireless earphones is still very much alive in the WF-1000XM6, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations.
● The Noise Cancelling Is Seriously Impressive
As I mentioned earlier, I was particularly impressed by how effective the noise cancelling is—it can reduce ambient noise to the point where even my own footsteps become barely noticeable. Of course, achieving the best performance requires selecting the right ear tips for your ears, but the companion app makes this process easy. It checks the fit of the earphones and helps you find the most suitable ear tips. What I especially liked is that it can compare all four included ear tip sizes, making it much easier to answer the question, “Which size is actually right for me?”
As for Ambient Sound mode, it doesn’t switch over instantly and let outside sounds in right away. Instead, it takes a moment to analyze the surroundings, creating the sensation that the space around you gradually opens up.
● Excellent Fit and Comfort!
When I was comparing the specifications before buying them, I noticed that the earphones had gained a little weight, which made me wonder whether they might feel less comfortable. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case at all.
The earphones fit naturally and securely in my ears, and once in place, I hardly noticed their weight. In fact, the slightly larger size turned out to be an advantage, making the touch controls on each earphone easier to operate.
Final Thoughts
That concludes my hands-on review of the SONY WF-1000XM6.
The improvements over the WF-1000XM5 are easy to appreciate, particularly in terms of sound quality and noise-cancelling performance.
If you’re looking for a pair of wireless earphones that can truly enhance your music experience, the WF-1000XM6 is definitely worth checking out!
