A Summary on the Basic Knowledge of Effects Pedals: Tremolo/ Vibrato Edition

Theme:sound&person

Hello! I’m Kaoru the composer.

Today, I would like to talk about the basics of tremolo and vibrato effects, as part of a series on essential effect pedal knowledge.

Among the many types of effects out there, tremolo and vibrato stand out for their unique and distinctive sounds. While the effect itself is easy to recognize, many people find it tricky to use effectively due to its strong character.

But, that’s exactly why I want more people to try them out. It’s because they’re incredibly fun and expressive!

So in this article, I’ll explain what tremolo and vibrato effects are, how they differ, and how to use them.
I’ll also introduce some recommended products you can purchase at Sound House.

■ What’s a Tremolo Pedal?

A tremolo pedal is an effect that periodically increases and decreases the volume of your sound.
It belongs to the category of modulation effects, just like chorus and flanger, and it's perfect for adding a distinctive, atmospheric touch to your sound.
Some even say that the tremolo was the first effect pedal in history!

Tremolo gives your sound a pulsing or choppy quality as the volume rises and falls. While the effect itself is quite simple, it can be used in creative ways depending on how it's applied.

Use it subtly, and you'll get a retro, dreamy vibe. Crank it up, and you can create an intense, machine-gun-like sound that really stands out!

Basic Control Knobs and Their Functions

Most tremolo pedals come with the following standard control knobs:

  • RATE (SPEED):Adjusts the speed of the modulation cycle
  • DEPTH (WIDTH):Controls how much the volume fluctuates
  • WAVE (SHAPE):Adjusts the shape of the modulation wave (e.g., smooth vs. choppy)

Tremolo works well with various playing styles such as single-note lines, chord strumming, and arpeggios. However, it may not be the best fit for fast, rhythmic techniques like funk-style cutting, where clarity and tight timing are key.

■ What Is a Vibrato Pedal?

A vibrato pedal is an effect that creates a periodic pitch variation, making the sound "wobble" or "shimmer."
Unlike tremolo, which modulates the volume, vibrato modulates the pitch, giving the sound a different kind of modulation feel.

Vibrato effects typically use a component called an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator), which generates frequencies so low that they’re inaudible to the human ear.
The effect works by applying this LFO-generated waveform to the input signal’s pitch, causing it to rise and fall rhythmically, thus creating vibrato.

Historically, the origin of the vibrato effect is often traced back to the Leslie speaker (also known as a rotary speaker).
Originally designed for use with organs, the Leslie speaker could also be used with electric guitars. Some adventurous guitarists started using it, and that’s how the vibrato effect began to gain recognition in the guitar world.

Basic Control Knobs and Their Functions

Vibrato pedals typically include the following control knobs:

  • RATE (SPEED):Adjusts the speed of the modulation cycle
  • DEPTH (WIDTH):Controls how much the pitch fluctuates
  • RISE TIME:Adjusts how long it takes to reach the maximum pitch variation

Fun Little Tidbit
・If you apply an LFO to volume, you get tremolo
・If you apply an LFO to delay time, you get chorus
Surprisingly simple, right?

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a look at some recommended products!

MR. BLACK / Deluxe DeluxePlus

This compact pedal packs both reverb and tremolo effects into a single unit.
It features a Hawaiian-inspired design and simple control knobs for easy use.

The spring reverb and bias-style tremolo sounds are faithfully reproduced in a compact format.
The effect feels very natural, giving the impression that it’s easy to blend into your playing without overwhelming it.

Among the pedals that combine tremolo and reverb, this one strikes perhaps the best balance between price, sound quality, and ease of use.

JIM DUNLOP / JD-4S ROTOVIBE

The Rotovibe is an effect pedal that simulates the sound of a rotary speaker that was famously used by musicians like Jimi Hendrix and many others.

It features vibrato and chorus modes, with the modulation speed controlled via the pedal itself, allowing for expressive, real-time control.
A side knob lets you adjust the depth of the effect.

While it does take up a bit more space on your pedalboard, it’s perfect for players looking to create unique and interesting sounds.

Since you can control it live with your foot, it’s a great tool to enhance your live performances.

SUHR / JST Jack Rabbit Tremolo

As the name “Jack Rabbit” suggests, this tremolo pedal delivers a lively, bouncing effect that’s much like a rabbit hopping along.
It features the signature dazzling design SUHR pedals are known for—eye-catching and stylish!

Key features include:

  • Selection of modulation waveforms
  • Tempo settings in quarter notes, eighth notes, or triplets
  • A tap tempo footswitch for on-the-fly control

These options allow for both precise, detailed setups and intuitive, real-time modulation, depending on your style and needs.

And that wraps up our look at tremolo and vibrato effects, along with some recommended pedals!

These effects can add a fresh, dynamic layer to both your live performances and music production, depending on how you use them.

Personally, I haven’t fully mastered them myself yet, but working on this has made me want to play around with them even more!

I encourage you all to check them out and see how they can inspire your sound!
