One of the first challenges that beginners face when starting to play the flute is choosing the right instrument.
What kind of flute should I buy to join a brass band?
Should I just get a cheap one since it's just for a hobby?
Do I need to buy an expensive flute to improve?
These and many other questions may arise.
Flutes vary widely in both tone quality and price depending on their materials and manufacturing methods.
So, this time, I’ve compiled a guide on how to choose a flute when purchasing, as well as some recommended models for beginners, categorized by price range.
I hope this helps you when making your purchase.
■ How to Choose a Flute
Just like with other instruments, higher-priced flutes tend to offer better quality, but it's important not to choose based solely on price to avoid regrets later on. Let’s go over a few key points to consider.
● Choose by Material
There are various materials used for flutes.
The material greatly affects both the tone and the price. Here are three types that are especially recommended for beginners:
1.Nickel Silver (White Copper)
[Advantages]
・Easy to play even with a shallow or weak breath
・The most affordable option
・Bright and light tone
[Disadvantages]
・Difficult to perform nuanced playing
・Limited room for improvement
・Susceptible to rust, especially with sweat and moisture
2.Nickel (Nickel-Silver Alloy)
[Advantages]
・Less resistance when blowing, easy to play
・Bright, light, and sparkling sound
[Disadvantages]
・Prone to damage, doesn’t last as long
3.Silver
[Advantages]
・The most popular choice
・Easier to vary the tone
・Rich, deep, and warm resonance
[Disadvantages]
・Tends to tarnish (but maintenance can help preserve it)
● Choose by Key Type
There are two types of keys (the parts you press with your fingers) on a flute, and each has its own features.
・Covered Keys
The keys are shaped like a cap, sealing the tone holes securely.
No air leakage, making it easier to turn breath into sound
Less strain on the hands
・Rings Keys
The keys are ring-shaped with holes, so you need to press the hole firmly to produce sound.
Provides good air flow and results in a bright tone
Allows for more nuanced playing
● Choose One with an E Mechanism
The E mechanism is a key system designed to make it easier to play the E note in the third octave.
In flute playing, the E note is considered difficult to produce due to the instrument's structure, so this mechanism is commonly used both domestically and internationally as a standard feature.
■ Recommended Flutes for Beginners on a Budget
Even for beginners, the right flute can vary depending on personal goals and budget.
Here, I will introduce flutes priced up to around 200,000 yen, but of course, there are many more expensive options available.
However, regardless of your goals, it's generally best to start with a flute priced at no more than 200,000 yen for your first one.
Once you’ve developed a certain level of playing ability, you can consider upgrading to a higher-end model.
[〜60,000 yen]
Flutes priced under 60,000 yen are known for producing a sound that resonates well.
However, there are limitations in terms of fine tonal nuances and resonance.
This price range is ideal for those who are not particularly focused on detailed performance, complete beginners, or anyone who just wants to try out the flute.
