  1980年前後のニューヨークのアンダーグラウンドミュージックを語る上では欠かせないムーブメント、ノー・ウェイヴ（No wave）。シーンの中心人物の一人であるジェームス・チャンスが長い闘病生活の末、亡くなったと発表されました。享年71歳。
  1977年、ニューヨークでジェームス・チャンス・アンド・ザ・コントーションズを結成。パンクとファンクやフリー・ジャズをミックスしたアナーキーなサウンドは、ソニック・ユースなどの先鋭的なロックバンドにも影響を与えていました。グループはブライアン・イーノのプロデュースによりノー・ウェイヴ・ムーブメントのバイブル的なコンピレーション・アルバム『ノー・ニューヨーク』に参加。当時のミュージックシーンで賛否両論を引き起こしたものの、以降のロック・シーンの音楽への導線として後年高い評価を受け、発売当時のアナログLPはコレクターズアイテムとしても人気の一枚となっております。
  その後もジェームス・ホワイト・アンド・ザ・ブラックス、ジェームス・ホワイツ・フレイミング・デモニックスでの活動やコントーションズの再結成やソロアルバムのリリースなど、精力的に活動を続け、2010年代のライブでも圧巻のライブパフォーマンスを繰り広げていました。長きにわたり音の前衛芸術を体現してきた、レジェンド・オブ・ノー・ウェイヴ、ジェームス・チャンスのご冥福を心よりお祈りいたします。
