iZotope / RX7

The iZotope RX Series is known as the industry standard for noise reduction software/plugins, making it possible to remove noise like never before. The latest version, RX 7, has further evolved its capabilities for noise and sound separation. It includes the incredible feature of separating tracks into vocals, bass, drums, and other elements (like guitars and pianos), allowing for rebalancing of mixed sounds.

*Below is the latest version of the RX Series, RX 10 Standard.

During mastering, it’s not only possible to readjust the mix balance of a track without using separate stems, but you can also extract individual instruments for remixing and sampling parts. The process is straightforward, and I’d like to introduce it to you.
First, let’s listen to the sound from iZotope’s video.

Here is the original track:

And here is the state after taking out the vocals:

The piano and synth parts that were originally there have been removed, while the vocals remain intact.

Here is the remix after importing it into a DAW:

How does it sound? It seems to work perfectly as remix material.

The video above touches on the method, but here’s a brief overview.
First, launch RX 7 and open the track you want to use.
Next, select the Music Rebalance module from the menu on the far right of the screen.

Then, you will see volume faders for each part of the track, as shown below. For example, if you want to keep only the vocals, leave the Voice fader up while lowering the Bass, Percussion, and Other faders all the way down. Then, click Render in the bottom right corner of the window.

The results may vary depending on the track, but you can adjust the detection accuracy for each instrument by moving the Sensitivity slider left or right. The Separation algorithm at the bottom, set to Advanced joint channel, will make processing heavier but often yields the best results, so consider this setting when exporting. You can find detailed explanations of each function in this manual.

This functionality can be used not only for remixes but also for balancing audio sources without stem materials, as well as live recordings or monaural audio files where vocals were recorded alongside guitars. Music Rebalance is included in the Standard version of RX 7 and higher, so be sure to give it a try!
*Please note that the effectiveness of Music Rebalance may vary depending on the source material.
