I usually watch anime as a hobby, and I finally watched Bocchi the Rock!. Well, I don’t usually get deep into slice-of-life anime, but the buzz around Bocchi the Rock! is something else. While watching YouTube, I came across a performance of the anime's music on "The First Take" and decided to check it out. I ended up starting the anime right away because I was so intrigued. I highly recommend everyone to go listen to it!
Of course, since I’ve joined a company that’s involved with music, I had to check it out.
By the way, while the characters in the anime are certainly charming, an important element that enhances their appeal is the music and sound equipment. This time, I would like to introduce the equipment featured in the anime (or products that seem to be modeled after it) that adds even more color to these wonderful characters.
1. AKG / K240 MK2
In the first episode, you can see the headphones that Bocchi-chan uses. The model is said to be based on the K240 MK2 by AKG.
The distinctive black circle on Bocchi-chan’s headphones seems to be inspired by the three blue circles that are a feature of the original model.
I’ve actually used these headphones myself and I found them to be very lightweight and comfortable for long periods of use. In terms of sound quality, they have a layered, immersive feel to them. While wired headphones often give the impression of being restrictive in terms of mobility, the K240 MKII comes with a coiled cable that can extend up to 5 meters, allowing you to comfortably listen to music while working around your desk.
I definitely recommend these to anyone considering Bocchi-chan cosplay!
2. Electro-Voice / SX300E
In the same episode, during the scene where they first hold a rehearsal in the studio, there were familiar-looking speakers mounted on the ceiling. The model is likely the Electro-Voice/SX300E. Even as someone who is currently studying PA systems, I immediately recognized them due to their status as being a standard PA speaker. It’s a product that you often see at various event venues and live houses.
3. SONY / MDR-CD900ST
In episode 5, during the scene where Bocchi-chan is dreaming about things she wants, there are headphones that appear to be the SONY/MDR-CD900ST.
The distinctive red line design was altered, so it might be a different model, but based on the overall appearance and printing, it seems to be this one. The same model was also worn by Ikumi Hasegawa, who plays the role of Ikuyo Kitase, the vocalist of the band in the "The First Take" segment I mentioned earlier!
When watching the anime, the guitars, basses, and the effects pedals that shape their sound are certainly eye-catching. It makes you want to play the same model of instruments or try to recreate their tones to the fullest. However, as someone who is studying PA equipment, I found myself not only captivated by these aspects but also eager to look a step further and explore the equipment that’s supporting their music activities.
I’ll do my best to become as skilled as the PA-san, a public address system engineer from Bocchi the Rock!. Whether you’re a fan of Bocchi the Rock! or someone who hasn’t seen it yet, this is a great opportunity to explore the anime, music, instruments, and the equipment—through this blog or otherwise!
I encourage you, readers of this blog, to watch Bocchi the Rock! and maybe even get your hands on some of the equipment that caught your eye!
