Hello everyone! This is Makino, the wind instrument specialist. With the national wind instrument competition now over, many schools are likely starting to prepare for their Christmas concerts. Today, I would like to introduce my top 5 recommended free choice pieces performed at the 2023 All Japan Band Competition's national finals in the high school division, based on my personal opinion and preferences.
① "Scenes for Wind Orchestra 'When the Sun Rises'" by Chang Su Koh
The first movement, "When the Sun Rises," depicts the sun rising from the sea. It begins with a quiet flute melody and gradually increases in volume and color. The bright sounds of the brass and percussion express the radiance of the sun, fully showcasing the appeal of wind orchestra music.
② "Brussels Requiem" by Bert Appermont
This piece was composed as a tribute and reflection on the terrorist attacks in Brussels, following the form of a requiem mass (Mass for the Dead). I believe this work carries a powerful message that conveys not only the sorrow and anger over the terrorist attacks but also hope and love.
➂ From the Ballet "Daphnis et Chloé" Suite No. 2: Daybreak, and Dance of the General Assembly (Maurice Ravel)
This is a wind band arrangement excerpted from the ballet "Daphnis et Chloé," composed by the French composer Maurice Ravel and premiered in 1912. The piece is characterized by its beautiful melodies and richly colored tones, bringing out the full charm of wind orchestra music.
④ From the opera "Salome": Dance of the Seven Veils (Richard Strauss)
This is a wind band arrangement excerpted from the opera "Salome," composed by the German composer Richard Strauss and premiered in 1905. Unlike the bright and lively music often found in wind bands, this piece is dark and heavy. However, it expands the possibilities of wind band music because of this contrast.
⑤ Symphony for Band "Wine-Dark Sea" (John Mackey)
This piece is a musical depiction of the adventures of the Greek mythological hero Odysseus, expressing various scenes and emotions. With its rich tones and powerful rhythms, it expands the possibilities of wind band music. The use of percussion and brass instruments is particularly impressive and highly recommended.
These were the top 4 recommended free choice pieces performed at the 2023 wind band competition. Each piece is unique and captivating, so be sure to give them a listen!
