5 Hidden Killer Tunes From Creation Records that Connect Rock and Club Music - From The Movie CREATION STORIES

CREATION STORIES was released in Japan in October. This movie is about the tumultuous life of Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, which dominated the British music scene in the 1980s and 1990s. This film is an important work for understanding UK indie rock culture and it seems to be getting a lot of feedback from rock fans. Personally I think it will be an unforgettable work for British rock fans. This film gives the firsthand experience of British counterculture by focusing on the 80s and early 90s, along with the films Quadrophenia, Northern Soul,“and VELVET GOLDMINE.
I won't go into details about the movie here because it’s still in theaters. But after watching the movie, I was reminded of how important clubs were to rock fans in the UK. It is no exaggeration to say that rave rock albums such as Primal Scream's Screamadelica and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless were only possible because Alan McGee was always there for rock fans.

Among such important indie rock labels, there are many hidden rave rock masterpieces that were not well introduced in Japan at the time of their release, but still made an impact in some clubs. This time, there are many new wave indie rock songs that are making their way around the club scene. This blog is filled with the past memories of the 80s to 90s Indie Rock scene. It was hard for me to just name five songs, but I would like to introduce some blood-pumping and killer tunes that Creation Records released (naturally).

1. The Telescopes/Celeste

A film that’s only on VHS that I would love to see on DVD is The Creation Records Compilation Volume Two - Creation2. As I still have the VHS as a family heirloom, I wanted to introduce this song, the opening number of the video, first. The Telescopes are a mixed male/female band with psychedelic organs, funk rhythms, sharp guitar sounds, and vocals with zero cosmic effect. The group has been active since 1987 and has released another album in 2021, perhaps due to the recent popularity of the shoegaze subgenre. Also, this number was released in 1991. A number with a neo-psychedelic sound so pure that it could not have been possible in the mainstream at that time.
I could say that I want to play this song and dance along with the video.

2. Slowdive/Morningrise

This single from 1991 has a pastoral song melody bubbling out of a flood of sweet feedback guitar noise. The video is also excellent and is included in the film mentioned above. If you want to have a relaxing rave party at home, you can make the room pitch black and play this song at high volume while using flash.
*If you are sensitive to stimulation, be careful while watching it.

Due to the recent popularity of shoegaze, Slowdive made their first visit to Japan at the Fuji Rock Festival during their 2017 reunion!

3. The Jazz Butcher/Our Friends the Filth

A number from the album Condition Blue released in 1991 by The Jazz Butcher, led by Pat Fish, who sadly passed away last year.
In the 80's, he was mainly active on the GLASS RECORDS label. They released many tasteful albums, including numbers with a strong Velvet Underground influence and fake jazz. They also released some house music albums, including some under different names. But, this song is from their rock albums. This is another essence of early 90s indie rock with a funky rhythm, a cool neo-acoustic guitar sound, and a female chorus.

4. Swervedriver/Ravedown

Today, Swervedriver is often referred to as one of the gateway bands to shoegaze. The band's songs are more hard rock for Creation Records, but the coolness of the vocalist's voice makes their first album, 1990's “Raise,” a classic. It's a slow, but danceable number that accepts loudness while looking down at the ground.
The 12” is also coupled with a trancy shoegaze instrumental.

5. The Jasmine Minks - Think!

The last song is a single from 1984 and the first in the history of Creation Records. Trancy garage soul music with American psychedelic guitars and nice forced soulful vocals, backed by frantically funky drums and bass. The sound is the opposite of a shoegaze band with many de-powered vocals. The sound is the opposite of a shoegaze band with many de-powered vocals. The beautifully done groove is a declaration of war by Creation Records since they’re a UK indie label that can't do it in the majors. I think the best part of getting drunk and playing it loud still rings the same today.

These are the five songs I selected just for the sake of writing, but when listening to them at record loud volume, I use Shure cartridge M44G and 100Sounds compatible needle RS-44-100B.

I personally recommend this combination for those who want to enjoy UK rock in a trancy way.

I hope you all enjoy Creation Records!
