[Hot Topic] Hardcore Techno Tunes on TikTok!!!

2021-10-05

Theme:Small Talk

On the social media platform TikTok, we can post 15-second footage and we often see videos where people dance to many various genres of music. You may find some cool music there and want to save it on your iPhone, but some posts don’t even have the music credit or information (it’s not good), so you may wonder how to discover the music information found on TikTok. Especially for hardcore techno tunes are arranged, it’s hard to find them, and even if you google, you can’t get webpages that showcase these tunes...

Then, I heard a revelation that said, “If you can’t find the webpage, you should create it.” So this time, I am going to introduce the tunes that I heard on TikTok!

1. Meland x Hauken / Chernobyl 2017

This groovy tune is “Chernobyl 2017” by Meland x Hauken consisting of two boys from Norway! I first heard this song around 2017, but it was used on TikTok around 2020. Then it became viral. You probably have heard the iconic part of its lyrics “Jeg vil at vi”. It reminds me of “Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone, which became popular in the same way with words in an unfamiliar language; “Ma-i-a hi” :p

The lyrics are in Norwegian, so many people may not understand what they are singing about, but they are saying something like “Anyway, let's drink and have some fun!"

2. Darren Styles, Dougal & Gammer / Stay Young

This song has been produced in collaboration of the three musicians who you’ve heard of for sure if you’re a fan of hardcore techno. This song was released 6 years ago, which is quite old now. At that time, songs with the repeated riff in the drop were the trend! I remember this genre was named ‘bassline hardcore’ and it was popular in Japan.

I once mentioned that this song was used for TikTok videos in my past blog article that featured the Day of Hardcore Please take a look if you’re interested!!

3. Darren Styles / Switch (Weaver PSY Edit)

Here’s Darren Styles again!! To be precise, it's psystyle, not hardcore but I like it so I put it in this lineup. I like Darren Styles.

The first drop was used for TikTok videos. The original version was the second solo from Electric Fox, which was also quite popular. The donk bass and the funny sampling voice saying “switch” makes a so-called fake drop. This song is so influential that this fake drop technique has come to be widely used in hardcore music.

I was ashamed to learn about this PSY Edit for the first time when it was used on TikTok. I haven’t been able to find the PSY Edit version probably because many tunes with this expansion were released after “Switch”...

4. The Prophet / Wanna Play?

This song is not so popular in Japan, but it is often used in videos showing the hakken dance. Hakken is a form of step dance originating in the Netherlands, the homeland of hardcore music. The dance consists of intense foot movements with almost no upper body movements. The tempo of the music used for the hakken dance is also quite fast, so you will be exhausted after dancing.

“Wanna Play?” is like a sample piece that embodies hardcore. I was wondering if I should pick it up in my blog post that featured highly aggressive hardcore techno that was uploaded the other day.

5. S3RL / Hentai

S3RL is a musician from Australia and has been active for quite a long time. It was his music that made me addicted to hardcore techno. I think that the range of silly music and serious music that he makes is really wide. As the title suggests, this tune is a silly one, but the cool drop is so addictive (by the way, hentai actually means perverted person in Japanese while in English, it refers to certain genres of Japanese anime or manga!!). So, I can’t post the sound source or video of this tune here due to the nature of the video, so please check it out yourself on YouTube if you’re interested.

I introduced 5 hardcore techno tunes (some might not have been hardcore techno...) that have been used on TikTok!

By the way, Sound House now has an official account on TikTok!! We are posting a lot of funny videos related to music, so please follow us and check it out!!
