Hello!
My name is Takuto Fujioka, guitarist in an acoustic unit called BABY BABY and an occupational therapist.
Thank you for always reading!
This time is a new series!
I will analyze the posture of guitar heroes who are famous all over the world in a series called "Guitar Hero Posture Analysis", and I’ll look at the posture of the guitarist! Lol
This is a bit off topic, but when I was a junior high school student, a band called ELLEGARDEN was popular, and at that time I wanted to play like guitarist Shinichi Ubukata and bought an Epiphone semi-acoustic and started playing the guitar.
At that time, I didn't know my right from my left, but I just wanted to play as cool as Ubukata! With that in mind, I thoroughly imitated how he played (his posture) in front of the mirror.
I learned to play from the posture, not from practicing the guitar. Lol
I watched their live DVD many times and learned from the video things such as the position of the guitar, how to hold the neck, fingering, stroke angle, how to keep rhythm with the body, which foot to put my weight on, etc. I absorbed all the information that was available. At that time, my mimicking was so complete that people around me said, "Hey, you play the guitar like Ubukata". Lol
These days, I feel that technique and knowledge are prioritized in the area of the guitar, but I think that the culture of appearance (posture) is also as important a factor as the guitarist.
From the posture, you can discover and learn many things like the above, in addition to their cool appearance.
I'm still studying, but I hope this opportunity will increase the number of people who are interested in how to play (posture).
Now!
This time, the first time, I will analyze the posture of "Jimi Hendrix", which every guitarist loves (?)!
The video I use as a reference is a live video called "The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live Stockholm, Sweden, 1969 First Show" released on YouTube.

Seen from the side, he looks like this.
His style is good! It seems that he was about 180 cm tall.

Is the position of the guitar a little below the belt line?

His hands are big too! He holds the neck firmly with a basic shake hand. His picking method also seems to be a little quirky.

The best rock guitarist ever, with a unique appearance and impact!
My first impression is ... a stoop!!!!!
There are two major characteristics to his posture.
① Head and neck anterior protrusion
② Pelvic posterior tilt
Roughly, I drew the positions of the skull, spine, and pelvis.

Since the human body is connected from end to end, if the posture changes in one place, it will be counter-balanced and other parts will be affected.
In the case of Jimi Hendrix, this kind of phenomenon is occurring.
Pelvic posterior tilt → Increase in lumbar kyphosis → Increase in thoracic kyphosis → Increase in cervical lordosis → Becomes a rounded back (kyphosis) and the head and neck protrude forward
At the same time, the knees and feet are bent for balance.
I've become a little more specialized, but don't be afraid and misunderstand that I'm in the position of an elderly person! Lol
Do you usually have this kind of posture?
Please try to stand and play the guitar in this position.
It may be because I'm not used to it, but it's a mess....
I think Jimi Hendrix was also putting a lot of strain on his neck, hips and legs.
If he kept this posture, for example, until he was 80 years old, he might have become a grandfather with a bent back pain. (Imagine that! lol)
However, when I watched Jimi Hendrix's performance, I didn't feel there was any hardness or awkwardness.
He always kept the rhythm with his whole body, and sometimes he moved to step on the effector during the performance, but I thought he was very stable, there were no mistakes, and his body movements were smooth.
It must have been a well-balanced posture for him.
It's possible that his height also has something to do with it.
What I learned this time
Jimi Hendrix was like a grandpa. Lol
Also from this, I learned that there is no right posture to play the guitar.
There is no fixed style, you’re free to stand and play as you like.
And I thought again that the influence of appearance (posture) on music is also great.
Because even if Jimi Hendrix straightens his spine and plays the guitar, don't you get a "this is wrong" feeling, and that is amazing, isn’t it?
Performance, tone, playing style, fashion, posture, etc. are all that "Jimi Hendrix" is about.
Posture is also an important factor for a guitar hero.
Even if you close your eyes and listen to music, you can see the person, and even if you can't hear the music, you can hear the sound when you see the person.
This is an absolute requirement for a guitar hero! (I will accept any objections)
What do you think?
Take this opportunity to be aware of the posture of your favorite artist!
I'm sure there will be something new to learn.
See you next time!
