To master jazz drums, you need to make a big difference in the way you used to be. If you want to start lessons with a professional, I strongly feel that the lesson starts with the cymbal legato, which is the basis of jazz, and you basically start over from scratch.
In fact, I am also practicing and sometimes I cannot see my progress and get impatient. Let me introduce three mental elements that I am keep in mind in order to play jazz drums.
Stoic
Being stoic is an essential part of being successful. The big role of the drums is to support everyone's rhythm. In fact, many professional drummers are very rhythmic, without which they would not be able to make their ears feel good with rhythm.
However, it is a little dangerous you’re too stoic. This type of person tends to get rooted, and once they're absorbed, their concentration is tremendous. Sometimes they forget to sleep and eat, or get dull in the cold and warm, and suddenly get sick.

There seems to be a slight tendency for me as well, and I have experienced a sudden dizziness when I forgot that I had skipped a meal, focusing on stroke practice without drinking water in a closed room in midsummer.
A stable body is indispensable for sustaining rhythm. Think of physical condition management as a drummer's job, and take breaks at reasonable times.
Competitiveness
As you go to sessions and live show, your peers will inevitably increase. Their presence is very inspiring, and sometimes these can be places to be taught and useful information exchanged.
It is also true that the existence of such rivals begins to make you anxious. As long as you’re good friends, there’s no problem, but if you don’t want to lose to someone else, it’s a little annoying when you start to burn unnecessary with the fighting spirit.

Unlike sports, where winning and losing are clear, music has an overwhelming number of elements that cannot be determined simply by ability. Even if you are good at playing, you may not get a lot of offers, but there are many people who are attracting a lot of customers even though they are less capable than you.
Also, drums rarely move solo and usually work with someone, so some coordination is required.
Is it because of that? Drummers have a leader temperament regardless of gender, and it seems that they tend to be the organizers. There may be many drummers who are hidden bandleaders.
Aspiration
Having aspirations is one of the compliments. We will work hard to achieve our goals, and for that purpose we will continue to practice soberly.
The pitfall of such aspiration is that it is easy to hunt yourself down. You want to be better, and desperately try to fill in the missing parts… you just have to do this much more. It may be close to perfectionism, but let's think a little before that happens.

You may not always the results of your efforts on your own, but the people who always support you are more or less aware. Some people are being overlooked because they are always struggling with yesterday even though some compliments are being thrown away at such times.
If you can only visualize your goals, though it may find painful, but in order not to fall into such a trap, I would like you to think about the people who always support you and review your feet.
What do you think? You have to have the three elements listed here in moderation, but if they are excessive, it will be mentally damaging.
When will you get better? You may be overpowered, unfamiliar with your rhythm, or maybe you’re not suited for a drummer?!
Before that happens! If you do get a little tired, you need to review whether these elements are in excess.
Including the meaning of self-discipline, I introduced the three elements that the drummer needs to keep in mind. Of course, do try to use them in real life as well.
