[Guitar & Bass] Various Maintenance Tools

2024-11-12

Theme:sound&person, sound

Hello, this is Yoshitaka. I occasionally post here.
Guitars and basses are not something you buy and forget about—they require ongoing maintenance.
Particularly in Japan, where the climate is hot and humid, even robust domestically made instruments known for their excellent craftsmanship are subject to seasonal changes. Moreover, regular string changes and cleaning are essential for daily practice.
As an amateur musician, I’d like to introduce some handy maintenance tools, focusing on items I’ve purchased from Soundhouse that have been especially useful.

1. Work Stand and Accessory Holder

In professional workshops, guitar maintenance is often done on dedicated benches with the instrument securely laid flat for adjustments. However, as an amateur with limited space, this stand has been a game-changer for me.

Originally designed as a foldable guitar stand and performance stool, the PLAYTECH GSTH proves incredibly convenient for maintenance tasks like string changes. The stool section works perfectly as a small accessory tray, allowing me to keep an eye on everything while making adjustments.

Being a bit careless by nature, I often misplace guitar-related tools. But by placing essentials like spare strings, a string winder, Allen keys, polish, a string gauge, wire cutters, and a tuner on the stool, my workflow becomes much smoother.

While it might be unconventional, I find it easier to change strings with the guitar upright on the stand. This method allows me to work more accurately, especially when I want to keep the number of string wraps consistent. Having the guitar securely fixed and in a position where I can pull the strings taut is a significant advantage for me.

2. String Winder

Having a string winder (peg turner) makes string changes so much easier. The difference between using one and not having one is significant, so it’s worth adding to your shopping cart when placing an order.
The PLAYTECH brand offers budget-friendly options that are perfect for players at any level.

3. Polish & Cleaning Cloth

When I started playing guitar decades ago, I remember polishes being separated for metal and wood parts. These days, however, high-quality options that work for both the metal components and the wooden body are readily available.

I use this particular product, and a thin, light application is all you need. Just a small amount goes a long way. Other reputable options, such as those from KEN SMITH, are also worth considering.

It’s a good idea to purchase cleaning cloths in a set with multiple pieces.

4. String Action Gauge

A String Action Gauge is a ruler primarily used to measure string height. The condition of a guitar or bass often fluctuates with the seasons, impacting its playability. While feel is important, knowing the string height you’re comfortable with can help maintain consistent playability.

This tool is especially useful if you plan to adjust your electric guitar’s bridge on your own. Additionally, if you’re selling a guitar or bass through a marketplace, including details like saddle height and string action in the listing will give potential buyers peace of mind—and save you from answering repetitive questions.

For reference, I use something similar to this, and it has proven to be incredibly handy. Having one in your toolkit is highly recommended for any guitarist or bassist.

*Note: Many manufacturers now recommend leaving truss rod, saddle, and nut adjustments to professionals, as outlined in their instruction manuals. Some brands no longer include Allen keys for these adjustments.

For minor forward neck bows, manufacturers often suggest loosening the strings and leaving the guitar to settle for a while rather than attempting drastic adjustments. It’s important to thoroughly read the manufacturer or retailer’s instruction manual to ensure proper care and avoid damage.

5. Affordable Tools from 100-Yen Shops

Here are some inexpensive yet highly useful tools you can find at 100-yen shops:

- Air Blower (originally for cameras or computers): Perfect for blowing dust off hard-to-reach areas.
- Makeup Brush: Great for gently cleaning dust from pickups, bridge crevices, and other spots where debris tends to accumulate.

Additionally, an A5-sized inner bag is handy for storing all your maintenance tools and spare strings in one place. These simple items can make routine cleaning and maintenance much easier.

6. Other Recommended Tools and Supplies

In addition to consumables like strings and bridge pins, having some versatile DIY tools on hand is highly useful. Investing in quality tools, like those used for RC models or bicycles, can help prevent stripping screws and ensure smoother adjustments. Here are some essentials:

- Radio Pliers and Wire Cutters: For cutting and securing strings during replacement.
- Screwdrivers: Useful for peg torque adjustments and various minor fixes.
- Small Adjustable Wrench: For tasks like tightening nuts, ensuring a secure fit.
- Allen Keys (for Truss Rod Adjustments): Only if you feel confident making these adjustments yourself.
- Contact Cleaner: For maintaining electronic components like jacks and switches.
- Masking Tape: Particularly helpful when changing strings on full-hollow guitars to mark the bridge position temporarily.
- New Batteries: A must for active basses or electro-acoustics during string changes or routine maintenance.

Check the battery requirements (e.g., 18V setups with two 9V batteries) when you purchase the instrument.

Pro Tip
For active basses or electro-acoustics, it’s wise to replace the batteries during string changes or periodic maintenance. Double-checking the power setup in advance can save you from surprises like discovering an 18V system when you open the battery compartment.

Thank you for reading through this long post—I hope you found it helpful! 😊
