Monitors headphones are essential for DTM (Desktop Music Production), but when placed on a desk, they can take up space and cause clutter. This is where a headphone hanger that attaches to the desk becomes quite handy.
Headphone-specific hangers are generally well-made, allowing you to safely hang your headphones, but many of them cost over 1,000 yen. Since I wanted to save some money, I searched around and found this product: the VELOS "Clip-on Hook," which costs just 330 yen each. I’ll introduce it here, so if you’re having trouble choosing a headphone hanger, be sure to check this out!
■ What is the VELOS Clip-on Hook?

The VELOS "Clip-on Hook" is a creative product that combines a double clip that’s typically used for holding documents with a hook. The usage is just like a regular double clip: simply press the handles to open it and clip it onto your desk or other surface. You can hang items such as bags, hats, or hangers on the hook, but I tried using it to hang my monitor headphones.
■ Can this clip withstand the weight of monitor headphones?

Since it's a clip design, will the VELOS Clip-on Hook be able to hold the weight of monitor headphones? The weight capacity of the Clip-on Hook is approximately 2kg when clipped onto a vertical surface, and about 500g when clipped onto a horizontal surface. Since a table is a horizontal surface, the weight capacity for this setup is 500g. My monitor headphones are from Sound House and they’re the CLASSIC PRO CPH7000, which weighs about 240g (excluding the cable), so the hook can comfortably support the weight.
CLASSIC PRO / CPH7000 Closed-back Monitor Headphones
This time, I tested the clip with the CLASSIC PRO CPH7000 from Sound House. Priced at ¥3,980, it's an affordable option for monitor headphones, but it offers great value with a well-balanced sound across low to high frequencies. Personally, I like the clarity of the high frequencies—it suits my taste. The soft, cushioned fit is also gentle on the ears, which is a nice touch.
As for other monitor headphones, for example, the closed-back SONY MDR-CD900ST weighs about 200g (excluding the cable), and the semi-open AKG K240 Studio weighs around 240g. With a weight capacity of 500g, the Clip-on Hook should be suitable for most monitor headphones.
■ About Price and Design

The biggest selling point of this product is definitely its price. While headphone-specific hooks usually cost over ¥1,000, the Clip-on Hook is priced at just ¥330, making it very budget-friendly. Despite the low price, the grip is very strong, and it securely attaches to the desk, which is a big advantage. It could be a good option to try it out before committing to purchasing a dedicated headphone hanger.
The design is very simple. It's a thin silver clip, so it doesn’t look too fancy. However, its simplicity means it will match well with almost anything. If design is a key concern for you, it might be better for you to invest in a specialized headphone hanger.
■ The Clip Can Hold a Width of Up to 20mm! Be Careful!

The Clip-on Hook can grip a board or surface with a width of up to 20mm. If you have a thicker table or surface, it might not be able to clamp properly. It would be nice if it could handle a wider width, but doing so might weaken the clamping force of the clip.
If you need to attach it to a thicker surface, specialized headphone hangers often have a wider clamping capacity, so in that case, it might be better to go with a dedicated hanger.
■ A Hidden Item!? Non-Slip Grip

This product has a hidden feature. I didn't notice it at first, but it comes with a non-slip grip. The reason I missed it was because it was tucked inside the backing paper of the package. If I hadn't looked more closely for this extra item, I would have thrown it away with the packaging.
○ Can Be Used on the Hook as Well

This non-slip grip is quite impressive. It sticks to the clamping part of the "Clip-on Hook" and stays firmly in place. Although it's meant to be applied to the table surface, I decided to wrap it around the hook and use it that way.
■ Of course, with a dedicated headphone hanger, you can rest easy!
In this article, I recommended the "Clip-on Hook" as an alternative to a dedicated headphone hanger, but when it comes to specialized headphone hangers, they offer a more premium feel and can be securely attached to desks and other surfaces. Additionally, they generally have a wider compatibility for thicker desks. With that in mind, here are some recommended headphone hangers:
CLASSIC PRO / CHH20 Headphone Holder
This is an original headphone holder from Sound House. Despite its affordable price, it can hold two headphones, which is a great deal for the price. The clamp can support up to a 40mm width, so it can be attached to thicker desks and surfaces.
This headphone hanger has a curved hook, which is one of its distinctive features.
The curve follows the shape of the headphone, which ensures that no unnecessary pressure is placed on the headphones, preventing damage. The clamp can also support desks up to 45mm thick, making it suitable for thicker surfaces.
This is a stylish headphone hanger made of metal, providing durability and sturdiness. The part where the headphones are hung is wide and curved, which follows the shape of the headphone’s headband and reduces wear and tear. It’s highly recommended for keeping your headphones in good condition. It’s compatible with surfaces ranging from 14mm to 40mm in thickness.
■ Easy to Remove and Versatile
How did you find the VELOS Clip-on Hook as an alternative to a monitor headphone hanger? This product is easy to remove and can be easily attached to so many places, so even if you don’t use it for your headphones, you can hang up bags, kitchen utensils, or anything else. If you find it’s not working as you expected, you can simply hang something else. It’s a versatile product that’s worth trying!
