Many people want a soundproof room for practicing instruments or singing. However, high costs and restrictions like not being able to renovate rental apartments or condominiums make it difficult to set up a proper soundproof room. Therefore, I researched soundproof rooms that are easy to install. In the latter part of the article, I will also introduce some mute accessories, so please check those out as well.

Danbocchi

Danbocchi is a soundproof room made from honeycomb-structured cardboard. The honeycomb structure is based off of a beehive and it increases the material’s strength, resulting in a sturdy soundproof room despite being made of cardboard.

While Danbocchi is not completely soundproof, it is especially effective at reducing mid to high-frequency vocal sounds. Additionally, its soundproofing can be enhanced by adding dedicated sound-absorbing materials. Because it’s made out of cardboard, Danbocchi is also more affordable compared to other soundproof rooms, which is another great feature about them.

Mobile Soundproof Tent "Pao"

This is a tent-style soundproof room. You simply assemble the frame and drape the soundproof tent fabric over it, making it an easy-to-set-up soundproof room. A great feature is that it can be disassembled when not in use.

Since it can be broken down and carried, it’s convenient for bringing to a friend’s house to set up a temporary studio, for example. It is also notable for being more affordable compared to other soundproof rooms.

Simple Sound Absorption Room "Light Room"

This is a compact and simple soundproof room that has a very cute design. While it is not completely soundproof, it provides sufficient soundproofing for practicing guitar, wind instruments, and singing. The walls are made from a combination of fabric, special urethane, and soundproof sheets. It requires no tools for assembly and can be set up simply by zipping the sheets up, which is a great feature.

There are windowed and non-windowed versions, with each available in sizes S, L, and LL, so it can accommodate practice for larger instruments like cello or horn. Compared to fully soundproof rooms, it is more affordable and easier to purchase. Its design is stylish, so it fits well in a room without feeling out of place.

Otegaroom

This is a wood-grain designed, assembly-type soundproof room. Compared to the three previously introduced options, this one is a much more solidly built soundproof room. Although it is a bit more expensive, it offers sturdy construction.

The structure sandwiches a soundproof sheet between sound-absorbing materials, and the interior of the room is lined with non-woven fabric. Thanks to this design, it reduces sound by approximately 15dB on average when measured within 2 meters of the room. The sound-absorbing material used is phenolic resin sound absorber that effectively absorbs mid to low frequencies, making it well suited for vocal practice.

If Installing a Soundproof Room Is Difficult, Consider Using Muting Devices

Although easy-to-install soundproof rooms are more affordable than fully soundproof rooms, you should still be prepared to spend around 100,000 yen. If you don’t want to spend that much, using mute devices for your instruments is a good alternative. Here are some instruments and mutes that help reduce sound.

YAMAHA / SLG200S TBS Silent Guitar

If you want to play an acoustic guitar quietly, I recommend trying a silent guitar. This guitar lacks the body of a typical acoustic guitar, so the natural sound is significantly quieter. It can also be used as an electro-acoustic guitar, and you can listen to your playing through headphones.

D’ADDARIO / PW-SH-01

This is a soundhole cover that blocks the soundhole of an electro-acoustic guitar to reduce the volume. It suppresses the acoustic resonance of the guitar and lowers the sound by about 30%.

GRAND GUITAR / Mute Device

This item clamps onto the strings of guitars, ukuleles, shamisen, and similar instruments to reduce their resonance. Although the sound’s sustain becomes shorter, it’s useful for practicing without disturbing people around you.

PLAYTECH / Trumpet Straight Mute PTMS1AL

Originally designed to alter the trumpet’s tone quality, this mute also slightly reduces the volume, making it useful as a practice mute.

PROIDEA / UTAET Karaoke Practice Device

Designed for karaoke practice, this device reduces the singer’s voice to about one-third of its original volume, making it useful as a sound reduction tool. Additionally, it allows you to hear your natural voice without bone-conducted sound interference, so you can listen to your voice as others hear it.

SUZUKI / SHINOBIX Silent Harmonica Full Set (Key of C) SNB-20

This is a harmonica with a mute cover set. Harmonicas can be surprisingly loud, but attaching this cover helps reduce the volume. It might take a little practice to get used to playing with the cover on, so take your time and get comfortable with it.
