When did humans first come to enjoy music? How on earth did ancient people, a.k.a primitive people, learn how to enjoy sounds and when did they start playing different kinds of musical instruments? Since these questions haunted me from time to time, I finally came up with the answer.
I’ve been reading the Bible on a daily basis since I was a student. I now make it a habit to read approximately four chapters a day from the Old Testament to the New Testament with the aim of finishing them in a year. Today, which is New Year’s Day 2021, I am restarting from the first chapter of Genesis about the creation of humankind as a way to welcome the new year.

The Bible contains so many events that it is impossible to put everything into memory. I read it over once and then quickly forget everything, so then I read it again to remember. - This process happens again and again, and I can now recall the chapter about the origin of music since I just read it again. Yes, there is a story about music in the Bible! The Bible clearly told us that the history of humankind developed together with music. The Old Testament begins with the story of Adam and Eve, of whom we have all heard. Banished from the Garden of Eden, they were forced to grow their own crops for food, and two of their children were also engaged in herding livestock and farming (Genesis 4). Their first son’s name was Cain, and the sixth-generation descendant of Cain was called Lamech. Among Lamech’s three sons, the division of duties in daily life became clear for the first time in the history of humankind. These duties could be considered to be professions as well. What were the first three occupations in the history of humankind?
The biblical record shows that Lamech’s eldest son was the father of all cattle ranchers, his younger brother Jubal played harp and flute, which means he was the father of all musicians, and Lamech’s youngest son, forger of all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron, was the first blacksmith. What a surprise, one of our far distant ancestors at the beginning of humankind was a musician who played musical instruments!
That’s why we all find ourselves enjoying music. The Lord created us so that we naturally love music from long ago! This is one of those things that we can learn by reading through the Bible to make a lasting impression on our hearts.
May your 2021 be filled with happiness and blessings!
