Thank you, thank you! Japan is a good country!

No, I did it again.... Unbelievable.... How many times have I said these words to myself? I just gotten home and looked in my hand now??? What? Where’s the laptop I was carrying in my hand? How many times have I forgotten my laptop here or there? Most often I leave it in an airplane. After landing, I’m concentrating on email until I get off the plane, and when I’m the last passenger and alighting in a hurry, what happens later??? Did I forget it again??? I was just using it and it’s important to me, so I can't have forgotten it. But when I stood up from my seat.... How many times have I had to think through this scenario? Still, for some reason, I keep forgetting my laptop. Also, on airplanes, I often put it in the seat pocket in front of me and forget about it. I’m always indebted to JAL's Forgotten Items staff.... Ah, hello. This is Nakajima….

Small cart used at Hong Kong International Airport

Small cart used at Hong Kong International Airport

My laptops have disappeared overseas, as well as in Japan. Even now, I recall my mysterious trip to Hong Kong. I has gone to Hong Kong on business and was working on email in the lounge near the lobby before departure. So far, so GOOD! Then, as the departure time was approaching, I got up from my seat, took my luggage and laptop, put it all in a cart, and started moving. Yes, at Hong Kong Airport, anyone was free to use these small carts, and I decided to put my small bag and laptop in the cart and go to the gate. On the way, I wandered around the shops for a while, and it was certainly a detour, but when I arrived in front of the gate, how?!?! My laptop was missing. Impossible! It was in the cart until just a moment ago. It can't have gone anywhere! Ah, this is a lifelong mystery. The first and last time that the laptop actually disappeared….

I left my laptop behind at this Doutor!

I left my laptop behind at this Doutor!

Japan is a good country. When this incident happened on this particular morning, I immediately started retracing my steps to figure out where the laptop might be. But that was just in my head. Well, when I recalled where I had been, there were only two places. A tempura soba restaurant where I ate breakfast (squid tempura soba at 410 yen is the best!), PC, be there for me!!! And then the station square Doutor Coffee Shop. It's hard to forget it at a soba restaurant where you have only a small table, so I immediately traced my steps back to Doutor! I ran to the shop and when I went inside, there were a lot of customers, right?!! Ah, it’s gone, I thought!!! But there it was, on the table, obediently closed as I had left it! What’s more, there was no evidence that anyone had even sat down at the table after I had left, presumably thinking the table was occupied the whole time. Did the people around me think that I’d gone to the bathroom for such a long time? Only in Japan! It's a country where even if you leave your laptop behind, it won't get stolen. Really, thank you, thank you! Japan is a good country!!!

Using two laptops in an airport lounge

Using two laptops in an airport lounge

Because I keep doing this kind of thing, I now always have two laptops with me when I travel. And now that I have two, I've been misplacing them more often. Is this fate? The chase continues tomorrow....
