[Band activity] Band activity during COVID-19

2020-11-06

Theme:sound&person

Hello. My name is Yoshitaka.
Studio and live house activities have become more difficult due to the COVID-19, and although I am lonely as an amateur musician, on the other hand, music streaming on the Internet using insta live, for example, for performance collaboration and other unprecedented music activities have become available to amateurs. Recently, I also enjoy playing videos using Instagram, so I will present the points I noticed from such activities.

1.Collaboration with followers

Opportunities to collaborate have increased, triggered by casual comments with followers who have similar musical inclinations. My collaboration method is not difficult: I just make a basic sound source and sent it to others to add vocals or a solo, and take a video with the melody and send it to me.
Note regarding the sending and receiving of files. With yahoo mail and Gmail, the maximum attachment size is 25M, so I use the following.

①Store the video in a cloud service such as Gigafile flight and send the URL by email.
②Use LINE or Message +.

The file size depends on the shooting & recording environment, but at FHD 25fps, one chorus exceeds 100Mbyte in about 1 minute and 20 seconds, so I think it is desirable to have a fiber optics internet environment. If possible, I think that the speed will be more stable in an IPV6 environment (I hear that the internet is slow depending on the location even with fiber optics due to working at home, online classes, etc.). If you choose a provider who supports IPV6, you must also note that the wi-fi router and so on need to support IPV6 as well.

2.Equipment used

In my case, I use the following equipment in addition to personal computers, acoustic guitars, and electric basses.

①Mixer (Soundcraft NOTEPAD-8FX audio interface) + headphones
②Rhythm box (Korg KR-mini). I can't play drums, so a rhythm box is a necessity.
③Vocal microphone
④Mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera SONY α6400 + tripod (Originally for still images, but now it is mainly for video.)

The performance improvements of smartphones has been remarkable these days, but I think it will be even better if you can use special equipment.
For example, the following condenser microphone that can be connected to a smartphone or a single lens camera as useful.

3.Copyright of video and audio in social media posts

The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors (JASRAC) explains copyright regarding video and audio on the following site.
https://www.jasrac.or.jp/info/network/pickup/movie.html

In particular, I think the following points need your attention, and should be read.

①Commercial use when playing cover songs
②Whether the platform has a comprehensive contract with JASRAC
(YouTube and instagram have signed a contract, twitter does not, and so on. It seems that not everything is completely free for personal use.)

4.YAMAHA remote session app SYNCROOM

Sending a sound source and adding vocals lacks a live feeling, but Yamaha has announced a remote session application called SYNCROOM. It seems to be popular because it has greatly reduced the sound latency due to the net environment. I haven't used it yet, but I think that it will spread widely in the future.

5.Finally

I think that human relationships are important even in connections on the Internet. I would like you to keep this in mind so that each other can play at ease. I'm grateful that even songs that couldn't be played in the real band world can be collaborated on over the internet.
