2024-05-02

Theme:Drums & Percussion

This is the second edition of my blog series that provides a simple introduction to rudiments. Today, I’m going to talk about paradiddle patterns!
In the previous post, I introduced the definition of diddles and the single paradiddle. You can check it out here:

⇒ Basic Drum Practice! Learn Rudiments Easily - Stroke and Diddle Edition

Double Paradiddle

This is a paradiddle with four single strokes added.
The basic motion is the same as the single paradiddle, but the double paradiddle consists of sextuplets.
Practice being careful not to add accents at the beginning of beats.

Standard Double Paradiddle

Inward Double Paradiddle

Reverse Double Paradiddle

Delayed Double Paradiddle

Triple Paradiddle

This is a paradiddle with six single strokes added.
Although it is written in 32nd notes, it is essentially the same as the single paradiddle, so take it easy and practice calmly.

Standard Triple Paradiddle

Inward Triple Paradiddle

Reverse Triple Paradiddle

Delayed Triple Paradiddle

Paradiddle-Diddle

This is a paradiddle with two diddles.
Unlike other paradiddles, the left and right hands do not switch at the downbeat, so it is more effective to practice switching the hands.

Standard Paradiddle-Diddle

Inward Paradiddle-Diddle

Reverse Paradiddle-Diddle

Delayed Paradiddle-Diddle

Phrases Using Paradiddles

Finally, here are some examples of phrases that incorporate paradiddles.
Rudiment phrases can be used not only for practice but also in fills in the song, so give them a try as ideas.

This is a rhythm pattern combining the Standard Paradiddle-Diddle and the Delayed Paradiddle-Diddle.

Next up is a combination of the Inward Double Paradiddle and the Inward Triple Paradiddle.
Practice carefully to switch between sextuplets and 32nd notes without disrupting the rhythm.
You can also replace the Inward Double Paradiddle with the Standard Paradiddle-Diddle or other variations, so please try out various ways.

The last one here is a phrase combining the Single Paradiddle and the Inward Paradiddle-Diddle.
There are places where you need to create dynamics such as the accentuation and ornaments, so practice to make them clearer dynamics as well as sequence.
Be especially careful with flams, ensuring the grace note does not overshadow the primary note.

This time, I introduced various paradiddle patterns.
Although sequences can vary, the principles of playing diddle rudiments are the same over any patterns.
Practice focusing on the use of fingers and dynamics during diddles, as you did with single paradiddles. This will help improve your basic skills, so be sure to incorporate these into your regular practice routine.
