Shielding Definitely Changes the Sound!

2023-08-09

Theme:sound&person, sound, Audio equipment

When playing the guitar, a shield is necessary to connect the guitar to the effects pedals and amp, unless you are using a wireless system. (In this article, a “shield” refers to a guitar cable.) Wireless systems, which use batteries and radio waves, are more convenient for stage performances, but generally speaking, sound quality is better with cables. Also, if there is a problem, such as no sound, a problem with the shield is easier to identify and solve. Since the usage of wireless and shielded systems are completely different, it is difficult to say which is better, but it is unlikely that anyone would use a wireless system in a recording studio.

Recently, I thought it was COOL to see a guitarist using a wireless system during a jam session when many players were pulling shields around in a small studio.

Now, guitar cables vary widely in price and you may be wondering which product to choose. There are different types of plugs, such as straight and L-shape, as well as a wide variety of materials and textures of cables.

[Shield construction] is as follows.

  • Core wire: Where the wire through which the sound signal actually flows
  • Insulator: Part that protects the core wire and shield
  • Conductive vinyl: Part that buffers noise when it touches the floor, etc.
  • Shield wire: Wire that protects from noise entering from the outside
  • Sheath: Protects the inside from noise. It also serves to distinguish it from other products by its color and pattern.

If you are a beginner guitarist, it may be difficult to distinguish the sound of different cables. In fact, there is a wide range of cables, from 3m cables costing less than 1,000 yen to professional-grade high-end cables costing more than 50,000 yen.

There is no need to use high-end cables that cost several tens of thousands of yen as a complete beginner, and low-priced standard cables should be sufficient at first.

However, I am certain that the sound quality will change depending on the cable. The power and sound loss also vary depending on the product, and the compatibility with the guitar should not be overlooked.

However, since it is not possible to try out cables at a music store, the most common way to decide is to look at the product reviews on each product at Sound House, ask a music store employee, refer to a cable feature in a guitar magazine, or listen to the opinions of fellow musicians to gain experience.

As for the length of the cable, 3 to 5 meters is probably appropriate. If you are going to be moving around in a live music club, a cable length of about 7 meters is appropriate. If the cable length is longer than that, it may cause sound degradation. If you are particular about sound, I think 3m is the best.

As an example of failure, I once ordered a 1-meter custom cable because I thought it was small enough. However, the 1-meter cable could not reach the floor with a stack amp such as a Marshall.

Okay, now back to the story. In fact, cables from different companies sound completely different. Beginners may not be able to tell the difference, but the more you play the guitar, the more obvious the difference becomes. This does not mean that the more expensive the better, but you need a cable that suits your playing needs.

Now, please read the differences in the cables I use for your reference. I hope you can understand, even if only a little, that they produce completely different sounds.

■ Canare
This is an overpriced shield that is ideal for use as a first line of shielding. The sound has no quirks and faithfully picks up the sound of the instrument.
■ Providence
It has a sense of transparency and contour, and distorts beautifully. It is rather solid. The beauty of the sound stands out more when playing high notes. Moderate power. Good sustain.
■ Whirlwind
The overtone structure is exactly as it should be with a metallic and 80's sound. The sound of a metal guitarist immediately came to mind. It has power and good sustain, so it is suitable for hard rock, metal, and other powerful sounds. It distorts hard. Depending on the picking, you can get effects from crunch to lead tones as you like.
■ Fender Platinum Cable
Picks up the sound of the strings faithfully. Well-rounded overtones. The sound of the guitar itself comes out well. The distortion has a high-class feel. I think it fits mid-tempo songs better than speedy and intense songs. Sound is rather well integrated.
■ Monster Cable
It has a unique and luxurious sound with a high-class feel. Although the price is high, this shield can fully demonstrate its performance when used in a studio, etc. The design of the plug is also original. The plug design also has originality.

Shields differ in ① power, ② range of sound output, and ③ ease of use.
To hear the difference in sound, connect the shield directly to a familiar amp and set the sound to your preference. You will clearly hear the difference if all you change is the shield.

This method is the easiest way to get a feel of the difference in shielding. However, there are some people who do not care that much about the sound quality of cables. For such people, why don't you go to a music store and buy a cable that is super durable, or one that you like the design of? You will be plugging and unplugging the cables every time you play. The feel and usability of the design of the plug may be a concern.

Lastly, here are some of the most popular shields that we carry at Sound House, and that we recommend to beginners.
