While bands are often formed with school friends, many musicians have formed bands with their siblings. The harmony that comes from sibling relationships is a key attraction. Some, like Oasis, are famous for sibling rivalry, but here are some of my favorite sibling bands.
■ Oasis
Formed in 1991 by Noel Gallagher (older brother, lead guitar and vocals) and Liam Gallagher (younger brother, vocals), Oasis is a famous British rock band. Known for their sibling rivalry, their breakup in 2009 was caused by a fight between the brothers.
The argument that led to Oasis’ breakup occurred when Noel made a comment about his brother Liam in an interview, which angered Liam. In retaliation, Liam destroyed Noel’s guitar. Not long after, Noel also smashed Liam’s guitar in revenge.

■ The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band, formed in 1969 in the U.S., was a southern rock band centered around brothers Duane Allman (older brother, guitar) and Gregg Allman (younger brother, vocals and organ). Their sound was heavily influenced by blues, country, and R&B.
Duane tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 1971. Originally, the Allman Brothers Band was based on the Allman Joys, formed in 1963 by the brothers. However, Duane’s death ended the brotherly duo’s collaboration. Afterward, Gregg Allman continued the band’s legacy by adding new members and undergoing two breakups and reunions while keeping the band active.

■ Van Halen
Van Halen was formed in the U.S. by brothers Alex Van Halen (oder brother, drums) and Edward “Eddie” Van Halen (younger brother, lead guitar and keyboards). Initially, Alex played guitar and Eddie played drums, but as Alex became better at drumming, they switched instruments. Eddie became famous as a pioneer of light-hand tapping.

This Eddie Van Halen’s signature model features EVH-designed pickups and a Wolfgang humbucker. The guitar is known for its distinctive design, with a wrapping tape-like appearance, earning it the nickname ‘Frankenstein’.
■ AC/DC
AC/DC was formed in 1973 in Australia, centered around brothers Malcolm Young (older brother, guitar and vocals) and Angus Young (younger brother, guitar and vocals). Malcolm provided backing while Angus, often in schoolboy attire, delivered energetic performances on stage.

Angus Young’s signature guitar is the SG model, and this BSG-STD Wine Red is a budget-friendly SG-type guitar that offers a similar feel, ideal for fans of AC/DC’s sound.
■ Frederic
Frederic is a Japanese band formed in 2009 by twins Kenji Mihara (older brother, guitar and vocals) and Koji Mihara (younger brother, bass and vocals). Hailing from Kobe, they blend rock and dance music with unique lyrics. Koji handles the songwriting and composition. Unlike Oasis, the Mihara brothers are known for their good relationship, possibly due to their twin connection.

Kenji plays the Fender Player Duo-Sonic HS, which is similar to the guitar he uses in the “oddloop” music video. The original model was released in 1956 as a student model.
■ Playing music with siblings? That sounds great!
Playing music together with siblings is a great experience, especially when they share the same passion and play in the same band! If you have siblings, why not start a band together?
