Don’t you think it matters? The relationship between breathing and guitar [Things guitarists should know about their body]

Theme:sound&person

Hello!
My name is Takuto Fujioka, a guitarist who can see your posture!

This time, I would like to think about "breathing," which I have never covered before.

In the case of songs and wind instruments, the relationship between breathing and playing is inseparable. It's natural, and you can't play without breathing.
However, playing a stringed instrument such as a guitar does not require breath to play the instrument. This is because the sound is produced mainly by using the hands and arms.
I think that few people are conscious of "what is happening with their breathing" when playing the guitar. Breathing is subconscious.

However, I think that breathing and playing are related.
We subconsciously "do not breath in time with the performance", but on the contrary, I think it is possible to conciously "breath in time with the performance". There are also benefits that can be gained by combining performance and breathing!

One possibility is that this will allow for more breathtaking performances by an ensemble.
For example, when playing the guitar in a band or a unit with vocals. (The same can be said for other players who need breath, such as brass instruments.)
By being aware of the breathing required for vocals and adjusting your own breathing to it, you will be able to follow the subtle changes in tempo that occur when the player's tension increases and decreases, as well as the adhesive that cannot be adjusted by the tempo alone.

If you are concerned that only the guitar will is running ahead of the band, you may want to observe the vocal breathing and play to match it (゚∀゚)
By feeling the breathing like a rest, it becomes easier to align the beginnings of the beats, and you can expect an increase in the sense of unity. I think it would be even better if you could play while singing the phrases and melodies.

As I said here, I don't think there is any problem even if the performance and breathing do not match.
The important thing is that the bodies of the members are connected and influence each other. I think you need to know this.
Breathing also comes from the body. Playing an instrument also controls what is happening in the body. If you can control your breathing consciously, you will have more time to play and you will be able to express yourself more freely. (In fact, I think professional athletes even understand breathing control.)

I wrote about the advantages earlier, but of course there are disadvantages to trying to breathe to match the performance. For example, you may be tense at a live performance and your breathing may be disturbed, or depending on your playing posture, your abdomen may be compressed, making it difficult to breathe. If it becomes difficult to breathe, it is possible that the muscles for breathing will be stressed and the body will become tense and stiff, and as a result, it will interfere with the performance.... Physical tension also leads to mental tension.

First of all, you may find something interesting if you try to pay attention to how you are breathing when you play the guitar.
How do you breathe when you play a song or a playing style that you are not good at? On the contrary, let's first understand how you are breathing when you are playing well.
You don't have to force yourself to breathe and play together. If you are too conscious, your breathing may be disturbed, the timing may shift, and mistakes may increase.
Basically, breathing should be gentle, not too shallow and not too deep.
Also, "a person who can play the guitar like singing" may have a link between breathing and playing. Thinking about this area may be one of the factors that bring out your individuality as much as refining the playing technique. I would like to continue research in this area in the future.

What do you think!?
"Breathing" seems to have nothing to do with playing the guitar, but if you dig deeper, don't you think it's related? That's why the guitar is interesting, isn't it? ( ^ω^ ) Til next time!
