Get the Sound of a Steinway D-274 at Home!? I Tried Playing Two Gewa Digital Pianos!

2026-08-18

Theme:Keyboards

Do you know a manufacturer called Gewa?
When looking for a digital piano, you probably often come across manufacturers such as Yamaha, Roland, Korg, and Casio, but Gewa is a long-established musical instrument manufacturer that was founded in Germany in 1925.
The digital pianos released by Gewa are the PP-3 and DP510, which we will be introducing this time.
To be honest, Gewa may still be a relatively unfamiliar manufacturer in Japan.
But! After actually playing them, I found these two models so appealing as pianos that I thought, “Shouldn’t more people know about them!?”
This time, while actually playing Gewa’s two digital pianos, I would like to introduce the features and differences of each model!

So, What Makes Gewa Pianos So Special?

First of all, one thing I would like to highlight about both models is their piano sound source. Both the PP-3 and DP510 feature high-resolution Hamburg grand piano sound sources based on the Steinway & Sons concert grand piano D-274. When I actually played them, I found that the low end had plenty of depth, while the high end was bright and sparkling.
The character of the sound changes richly depending on how hard you play, and I was able to comfortably enjoy performances with clearly defined dynamics, just like in classical music.

The keyboards use the 88-key weighted hammer-action Gewa Smart Touch Keyboard. They have been designed with compatibility with the piano sound source in mind, allowing you to enjoy a natural playing feel reminiscent of an acoustic piano.

What’s more, they even feature a user calibration function that allows you to adjust the sensitivity of each individual key. You can make fine adjustments such as, “I want to change the response of just this key a little.” Pretty serious stuff...!

① Gewa / PP-3
A Digital Piano Whose Style You Can Choose—Compact or Stationary!

First up is the portable PP-3.
The main unit weighs approximately 14.8 kg. Despite featuring an 88-key hammer-action keyboard, this model offers greater freedom in placement compared with conventional stationary digital pianos. You can of course place it on a standard keyboard stand for compact use, or combine it with the separately sold dedicated stand to set it up in a style similar to a stationary digital piano!

This is also a nice point for people who think, “I want to use it in a space-saving way for now, but eventually I’d like to place it properly in a piano-style setup.”
The appearance is also quite simple. The main unit has eight buttons that bring together the necessary controls, so it doesn’t look cluttered. Personally, I really like this clean and simple design.

I immediately gave it a try... The sound is good!!

The first thing I noticed was how well the piano sound comes through. It has plenty of depth, but it isn’t too boomy, and there is also a sparkling brightness in the high range. Of course, it seems suitable for practicing classical music, but I also think it would work well when you want to use a piano in a band. There are 15 built-in tones. In addition to piano sounds, you can use electric pianos, organs, and more, with a maximum polyphony of 256 notes.

And the built-in speakers are quite powerful too! It uses a 2-way speaker system with 20W output speakers positioned so that the sound reaches the player. I had the image that “a compact digital piano = decent speakers at best,” but even with just the main unit, the PP-3 allowed me to enjoy playing comfortably.

It also supports Bluetooth audio/MIDI, so you can play music from your smartphone through the main unit or use it together with a piano-learning app.

“If I want a good piano sound, but I don’t want to have a large stationary model taking up space!” For those people, I highly recommend the PP-3.
You can also turn it into a stationary-style setup by combining it with the dedicated stand, so another attractive point is that you can change its form according to your environment!

② Gewa / DP510
If You Want to Take Your Time Playing at Home, This Is the One!

Next is the stationary DP510.
Compared with the stylish atmosphere of the PP-3, this one has a much more ‘piano-like’ design. While it has a classic feel, the control section is quite simple. It looks like it would fit naturally in a living room or lesson room as well.

And when I played it, what I noticed even more than with the PP-3 was the power of the sound coming from the main unit. The DP510 uses a 2-way, 4-speaker configuration, with two speakers for the low-to-mid range plus two tweeters facing the player. There is plenty of thickness when playing the low notes, and the sound feels like it spreads out properly from the main unit. For those who want to enjoy the resonance of the piano itself at home without using headphones, I think this is quite appealing.

The keyboard is the same 88-key GEWA Smart Touch Keyboard as the PP-3. It isn’t too light, and it is easy to produce dynamics, making it a good choice for those who want to properly work on their basic piano practice.

There are 21 built-in tones, more than the PP-3. It also features a function for recording in MIDI or WAV format to a USB flash drive.

“I want a digital piano that looks properly like a piano because it will be placed in my home.”
“I want to pay attention to the sound coming from the speakers, too.”
“I want to properly practice classical music and piano.”
For those people, I recommend the DP510!

You Can Even Make Detailed Settings from Your Smartphone

One interesting thing about both the PP-3 and DP510 is that they are compatible with the Gewa Piano Remote App.

You can adjust tones and effects, keyboard settings, the metronome, layer/split functions, and more from a smartphone or tablet. The main unit deliberately has a simple control panel, while you can use the app when you want to make more detailed adjustments. I see—this is quite a rational approach.

“I normally just want to turn it on and start playing the piano right away. But sometimes I also want to tweak the settings in detail...” For people like that, I think this is a very easy-to-use setup.

Which Is Better, the PP-3 or DP510?

To sum it up simply:

PP-3

  • You want to prioritize compactness.
  • You want to freely choose how to set it up.
  • You want to be able to use it in a stationary style with the dedicated stand.
  • You want to use it in various environments, not just at home.
  • You want high-quality piano sound and simple operation.

DP510

  • You want to keep it set up at home.
  • You like a piano-like appearance.
  • You want to pay attention to the sound from the built-in speakers.
  • You want to properly practice piano.

These are the ways I recommend choosing between them.
Rather than being “digital pianos packed with lots of features,” both gave me the impression that they are aimed at people who want to properly enjoy the sound, keyboard, and playing feel of a piano. In particular, one interesting aspect of the PP-3 is that you can start by using it compactly and then add the dedicated stand when you need it. On the other hand, the DP510 is suited to those who want to properly set up a digital piano for home use from the beginning.

Conclusion

What did you think?
Many of you may have learned about the name Gewa for the first time through this article. I also played both models again, and what left the strongest impression on me was, once again, the piano sound. With the combination of piano sound sources based on the Steinway D-274 and the Gewa Smart Touch Keyboard, these two models allow you to properly enjoy both the sound and playing feel of a piano.

And right now, both the PP-3 and DP510 are available at a limited-time special price! In addition, the Gewa Digital Piano Review Campaign is currently being held through Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
Among those who purchase an eligible product and submit a review of 200 characters or more, three winners will be selected by lottery for each model. PP-3 purchasers will receive 10,000 S Points, while DP510 purchasers will receive 20,000 S Points!
Not only those who purchase during the campaign period, but also those who have previously purchased an eligible product from Sound House can participate.

With the limited-time special prices and the review campaign happening at the same time, now is truly the perfect time to check out Gewa digital pianos!

“I want to look at something other than the usual standard manufacturers.”
“I want to be particular about piano-like sound and touch.”
If that sounds like you, be sure to take this opportunity to check out Gewa’s digital pianos!
