Experiencing the Excellent Ability of DMSD Slender Insulator

Continuing from the previous review, I borrowed another exciting item to review.
This time, I’ll be trying out this!

DMSD/Slender.

DMSD / DMSD Slender

What is this exactly? In a word, it’s an insulator.

The DMSD Slender allows for fine height adjustments.

According to the Japanese Wikipedia page;

Insulators in the audio field are used to prevent interference from vibrations generated by devices such as speakers and amplifiers with the installation surface or other equipment. There are insulators designed to absorb vibrations and others to quickly dissipate them. They come in various materials and shapes, from elastic materials like rubber to hard materials like stone and metal.

Simply put, insulators minimize the vibrations caused by various factors that interfere with the speakers, allowing you to hear the speakers’ true sound.

With the principle of “seeing is believing”, I conducted an experiment!

01. Studio Monitors JBL 305P MKII or 306P MKII + Monitor Stand

I used the Zoom H6 recorder and Audacity recording software for simple recording.
The distance between the microphone and the speaker was 1 meter. Since the DMSD Slender adds height, I adjusted the microphone height to be consistent with and without the insulator.

How did it go?
Here are my personal impressions:

• The excess spread of low frequencies was significantly reduced, resulting in a tighter sound
• Partly thanks to this, the overall sound was more cohesive
• I could hear the speaker’s original sound without the excess noise

After finishing the recording, I realized that the DMSD Slender supports weights from 12-180kg. The JBL 305P MKII (4.7kg) and 306P MKII (6.1kg) were a bit too light. However, the difference was still noticeable, so I tried out the next setup, wondering if the effect would be even clearer with larger speakers.

02. Bass Amp (about 25kg, floor-standing)

I took a one-take video using the iPhone’s built-in microphone and standard video mode. Please excuse my poor bass playing!

First, with the DMSD Slender, then without.

I believe this video clearly shows the difference.
While playing, I could feel the difference in the lows, especially in the vibrations of long tones of the 4th string.
Regarding whether an electric bass sounds better with or without the insulator, it’s hard to judge, but my personal opinion is:

If you want to record with a mic → Use the DMSD Slender

This setting definitely allows you to capture the true sound of the bass amp. Personally, I prefer eliminating the unnecessary bass amp sound that spreads out and excess part that’s around the core of the sound (so I always slightly cut the bass on the EQ), making me feel comfortable to play.

If you want to create a sound that includes low-frequency resonance → Without the DMSD Slender

One of my younger colleagues felt that the sound had more depth and volume in the lows without the insulator. Indeed, since most environments don’t have insulators, people are used to creating sounds with resonance. Therefore, the familiar sound might be without the insulator.

How was it?
I was very satisfied with experiencing the effectiveness of insulators firsthand. Even without insulators, I believe you can achieve good sound, but I learned that there’s still a better sound beyond that. The DMSD Slender is a must-try item for those who pursue pure sound unaffected by the surrounding environment.
