Elusive Gear Worth Searching For This Summer

2023-07-11

Theme:Guitars, Serviceman Diaries

Are you doing well!? If you have energy, you can do anything... or so they say, but I apologize for not writing an article from the series this time.
I am truly sorry!
Please keep the unfinished buffer safely stored.
It will see the light of day in the next post.
I don’t want to make excuses, but I’ve been really busy...

That aside, I’m writing about elusive gear today.
Despite being in the musical instrument industry for nearly 40 years, there are still items I’ve never seen. Today, I will introduce some items I’ve obtained but somehow lost along the way.
I’ve tried to find them again, but they are hard to come by.
So, I recommend you buy them without hesitation if you come across them.

First,
the Pearl AD-33 Analog Delay

This is an excellent delay.
Nowadays, there are digital delays that emulate the analog sound, but this one is purely analog.
Moreover, it allows you to set two types of delays and switch between them.
Analog delays back then used BBD elements, which required noise reduction circuits. These circuits gave the sound a soft, warm quality, and this delay is sufficiently low-noise with a quality that stands up even today.
I used it with short delays for riffs and long delays for solos.

Next up is the well-known
Yamaha PSA Series CO-01 Compressor

Among compressors, this one has minimal quirks and provides a satisfying, definite effect.
While the MXR Dyna Comp tends to squash the sound heavily, this compressor offers a balanced, three-dimensional sound.
It is also very low-noise and combines well with other effects.
Personally, I didn’t like the somewhat distorted sound of the MXR.

Next is a piece of equipment that only a few in the industry might know,
VestaFIRE Space Commander

[Sorry, no image available]

This is amazing! The sound image you input floats and moves freely.
For example, if you connect a guitar and output in stereo, it can automatically pan the sound left and right... What? You say that’s common now?
This is different! This Space Commander makes the sound float and move around freely.
I can’t even imagine how much it would cost if found now.
If you think, “Oh, maybe that’s the one in my storage,” please contact me secretly.

Lastly, a bonus.

You probably know the BOSS Digital Delay Series,
particularly the highly acclaimed DD-3

I also use it, but I’ve had to replace it three times. The DD-3 has a long production period, resulting in different versions and manufacturing countries.
Moreover, they all sound different.
My favorite one is pink on the back and made in Taiwan, likely produced between 1999 and 2000. I was astonished by the sound quality differences compared to other production years.

There are many more pieces of gear I want to find, like the DOD 7-Band EQ (with a whopping ±18dB range) and the SoulKISS wah-wah controlled by a mouth-held sensor.
I’ll introduce more as I get the chance.

Next time will be the final edition on the buffer, so don’t miss it.
See you then.
